Liverpool keen on signing French centre-back pair as per football expert report

Liverpool has reportedly contacted the representatives of the French centre-back duo alongside Bayern Munich and Chelsea for a permanent deal. However, the club doesn’t want to let go of their defensive pair in the on-going January transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp’s side needs defensive reinforcements soon to replace the injured Van Dijk and Joe Gomez. The Reds are struggling with injury concerns especially at the back with their skipper ruled out. Virgil Van Dijk is yet to recover from the injury he picked in the Merseyside derby.

Jordan Pickford’s rush tackle has ruled out the Dutchmen from Premier League action for Liverpool. Following that, Van Dijk’s defensive pair Joe Gomez also picked up a serious injury, which is keeping him out. However, Jurgen Klopp has done a fantastic job till now with his reserve players.

Joel Matip is also not completely fit enough to compete in the league. This forces Brazilian Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to play as central defenders for Klopp’s side. Although, the duo didn’t work out against Southampton in the Premier League clash.

The race for the title gets tighter and Klopp needs some defensive reinforcements to put a fight for the title. While new summer signings Diogo Jota and full-back Tsimikas are also injured for the Reds. The management has shortlisted a number of candidates for the defensive role.

According to Christian Falk

, Liverpool have contacted the representatives of Upamecano along with Bayern Munich and Chelsea. The Reds are also interested in the services of Upamecano partner Ibrahima Konate, who is also plying his trade for RB Leipzig in Bundesliga.

However, RB Leipzig isn’t interested in allowing the highly-rated center-back duo to leave in January. In that case, suitors will be required to activate Upamecano’s £37.4 million release clause in the upcoming summer. While Konate’s contract ends by the summer of 2023.

Worthy investments for the future?

Liverpool lost their Croatian defender Dejan Lovren in the summer to Zenit St Petersburg. The English are yet to find a replacement for the centre-back’s vacant place. However, Klopp signed Greek full-back Tsimikas in the summer, who is currently on the injury list.

According to the Guardian, the German outfit will not sell the 22-year-old this month. However, Jurgen Klopp will need the French defender soon in his squad to fight the battle for the title. The Reds will be happy to have the French duo by this month, which will bolster their defensive set-up.

Ibrahima Konate, 21, has been impressive for the German club in recent times. The defender has scored a goal as well for RB Leipzig this term in Bundesliga. The Frenchmen is strong in the air and his style of play is perhaps more suited to Liverpool than his teammate.

Bringing in these two strong centre-backs to Anfield will help Liverpool in the long run. Both Upamecano and Konate are young and can only develop under a setup like Liverpool. If the Merseyside side club can pull-off this deal, it’ll be an amazing investment for the youngsters.

However, this deal won’t be an easy task for Klopp’s side to sign the duo. European giants Bayern Munich and Chelsea are eager to sign the 22-year-old defender, who’ll be made available by summer by Leipzig as per reports. The clubs will need to trigger the clause in the summer to secure his services.
