Liverpool enquire about the defensive duo as they seek deadline deals


Transfer rumors are getting into the final run as the window closes at 11 pm on Monday in European football. The patch works are still pending for Liverpool FC and Klopp is still confused with the options. The defensive department is in serious trouble at Anfield.

The first line centre-backs are suffering injuries and it spread like an ‘epidemic’ in the entire department. Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez are out of the competition for quite long and the return is not skeptical.

Options like Fabinho and Joel Matip are recent additions to the list and both of them will miss out some weeks. Captain Jordan Henderson is covering up the defensive line these days with youngsters Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips.

The lineup is not working well for Klopp as wing-backs are forced to stick with the line sacrificing threatening runs to the front. This has affected the XG rate and goals scored by the Reds. Despite all these struggles, Liverpool are at 4th position in the Premier League table with just 4 points behind top-spot.

The transfer window is shutting down and Liverpool are yet to make a move in the market. According to Express, the Reds are chasing down RB Leipzig defensive options Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate.

21-year-old French pairs are meeting the requirements of Anfield and dependable as long term options for the Reds. Dayot Upamecano is preferred among the two according to the speculations. Upamecano has got more experience in terms of games and currently fit for a move.

He is considered as the most in-demand centre-back in Europe for the last few transfer windows. He is good at the positioning and can guarantee with aerials in the backline. His contract in Germany will end in 2023.

According to Transfermarkt, the player holds a release clause by the end of this season which makes him available under £40 million. He renewed his contract last year which created a financial barrier.

Meanwhile, another available option from the Red Bulls is Ibrahima Konate. The Frenchmen is suffering an ankle injury and the deal would be another addition to the medical room of Anfield. An urgent replacement is a plan for Liverpool to keep the competition in hand.

Also, the Merseyside have got a few other names along with them. The list includes Bayern full-back David Alaba who already fall for Spanish giants Real Madrid. But transfer expert Fabrizio Romano cites that the deal is not easy for the Reds as the player had a verbal contract with Los Blancos and it is his dream to play in Madrid.

Anfield have also linked with Brighton’s Ben White, Sven Botman of Lille, and Schalke defender Ozan Kabak with long term plans. The Premier League champions are up against West Ham United this Sunday in the hope of advancement in the table. They are now four points behind the toppers Manchester City.

The game against Tottenham Hotspur was a positive one for Klopp and they have settled the goal drought facing for the last few fixtures. But they are up to big challenges as the Champions League knockouts are weeks away from them. They are taking on the same Leipzig on February 17th and if they can sign one of the defenders it can turn into an extra advantage for the European tour to Istanbul.
