Liverpool are eyeing a summer swoop for Manchester United target Jadon Sancho if Mohammed Salah opts to leave the club at the end of the season.
The Reds are in danger of missing out on Champions League football for next season. They are currently sixth in the Premier League table, four points off fourth-placed Chelsea, with only five games remaining. Failure to qualify for the Champions League could see the club lose many key players. And one of the players could be Mo Salah.
The Egyptian winger has been the standout player for Jurgen Klopp’s men this season, with 20 league goals to his name. To make matters worse for Liverpool, Salah last month admitted that he wants to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona before he hangs up his boots.
Liverpool are already looking at Salah’s replacement. And according to Bild, the Reds are keen to beat rivals Manchester United for Jadon Sancho, who has enjoyed another fruitful season in Germany.
Sancho’s incredible season:
Jadon Sancho has been in the sparkling form once again this season for Borussia Dortmund. After having a slow start to the season, the Englishman gone up a level in the second half of the campaign. He has scored six goals and provided nine assists in just 22 Bundesliga starts.
The 21-year-old’s impressive season has seen him get an overall WhoScored rating of 7.50, which is only behind star striker Erling Haaland in the Dortmund team. But Sancho leads his teams in terms of key passes (62) and successful dribbles (68) this season.
He still hasn’t hit the heights of last season. That is due to his recent injury problems and off-the-field issues. He is still having a scintillating season.
But similar to Liverpool, Dortmund are in danger of not qualifying for next season’s Champions League. If he fails to do so, Sancho will likely leave Germany and return back to England.
United or Liverpool for Sancho?
Manchester United were very close to signing Sancho last summer. But the club’s board were unable to meet Dortmund’s asking price of £105 million. And the Red Devils are ready to go again for Sancho this summer and for his teammate Haaland.
As for Liverpool, losing Salah would be huge. He is one of the league’s deadliest goal-scorer and an integral part of Klopp’s team. Sancho is not a proven goal-scorer like Salah but he has more creativity to his game than the Egyptian. And Sancho’s build-up play is very similar to that of Salah. He can be a like-for-like replacement for Salah at Liverpool.
But the main stumbling block for Liverpool is that they can’t offer Sancho Champions League football next season, but United can. The Red Devils can qualify for the competition either through their league position or by winning the Europa League. This is just one but a huge factor for Liverpool in their pursuit to sign Sancho.
Liverpool have a very crucial last five games, starting with a trip to Old Trafford this weekend. And it’s fair to say, whoever comes on top in that game, will be favourites to get Sancho this summer.
