Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has backed his player to regain confidence after they came under pressure following the Reds’ below-par start to the 22/23 season.
Liverpool have not had the best of starts to the new campaign. The Reds languish at ninth in the point table with 10 points from their first seven matches in the English top-flight this season.
Liverpool is already 11 points behind league leaders Arsenal, who have played a game more. The Merseyside outfit needs to cover lost ground soon before it becomes a little too late.
Klopp’s men faced Brighton & Hove Albion in their recent match in the Premier League. They trailed by two goals before clawing their way back into the game and scoring three goals to take the lead. However, Liverpool failed to earn all three points as Brighton scored an equalizer to salvage a point.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp backs players to regain confidence
The Reds resume their Champions League campaign next. They host Rangers at Anfield in the Champions League group stage.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Klopp explained that all players can suffer from a lack of confidence. He pointed out Ronaldo’s situation this season and Lionel Messi’s performance in the last season to assert his point.
“People can ask ‘how can it happen that these players are not full of confidence?’ But do you think Cristiano Ronaldo at the moment is at the top of his confidence levels? And he was for ages the best player in the world. Now it’s not going his way, and it is not exactly the same,” Klopp said.
“It happens to all of us. Lionel Messi played last year last season where it was not exactly the same.
“You have to work for it, you have to take the little things to make a step in the right direction and be ready for the moment when it’s back. In an individual sport, you can fight yourself through it, but in a team sport you have to do it together and that makes it more complicated.”
Liverpool’s Champions League 22/23 campaign
Meanwhile, Liverpool sits second in the Champions League Group A having played two matches. They began their Champions League 22/23 campaign with a match against Napoli. Liverpool suffered a heavy defeat in that match as Napoli secured a 4-1 win.
The Reds then faced Ajax in their second match and sealed all three points with a 2-1 victory as Joel Matip scored a late winner.
Meanwhile, Rangers come into the game having lost their first two matches in the Champions League this season. They fell to a 4-0 defeat to Ajax in the first game before Napoli cruised to a 3-0 win in the second game.
Liverpool is the favourite to win the game against Rangers, and Klopp will be hoping his side can as they look to regain confidence following the below-par start to the season.
