Liverpool transfer news: The Reds have shown interest in signing Lille FC attacker Jonathan David, over the past few weeks.
David established himself among the best young attackers in world football since moving to Lille from Gent in the summer transfer window of 2020.
The Canada international helped Lille win the Ligue 1 title last season, scoring 13 and assisting two goals.
He started the current season brilliantly as well and is the leading goalscorer(10 goals) in the French top division. The Canada international also contributed two goals in five UEFA Champions League games thus far.
Liverpool news: Jonathan David price could skyrocket in January
According to reports(via Express), Liverpool will need to pay a hefty transfer fee if they pursue a deal for Jonathan David in January.
Lille FC are reportedly demanding £30 million to sell the talented Canadian. However, that fee could rise significantly if they reach the knock-out stages of the UEFA Champions League.
The French club are currently sitting at the top of their UEFA Champions League group with 8 points from 5 games. They can confirm their place in the next phase of the competition by defeating Wolfsburg on December 8.
What will Jonathan David bring to Liverpool?
David is a versatile attacker who is comfortable playing anywhere across the forward line. His key strengths are his pace, physicality and dribbling skills, while also being lethal in front of the goals. He averaged 1.6 dribbles and 1 key pass per game in the UEFA Champions League this season. The 21-year-old is also a vital member of Canada’s national team set-up and scored 18 goals in 24 appearances for his nation thus far.
Long-term replacements for Firmino, Salah and Mane
The Reds’ front-three of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane is among the most lethal attacking trios in world football. The trio scored well over 300 goals between them, helping the club win the English Premier League during the 2019-20 season and UEFA Champions League in 2019.
However, Firmino turned 30 in October; Salah and Mane are also approaching their 30’s. The Reds cannot rely on them for long and need to sign their replacements going forward.
The Merseysiders spent £41 million to sign Diogo Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020. But they need to inject more young blood into their forward line.
Liverpool are currently third in the Premier League table, three points behind leaders Chelsea. They will next play Wolves in the league before making a trip to Italy to play AC Milan for the Champions League Group B game on December 8. Meanwhile, Lille are currently 12 in the Ligue 1 table with 21 points from 16 games. They will go up against Troyes for their next league game on Saturday.
