Liverpool News: According to rumours in his home Brazil, Liverpool would compete with Manchester United for the signing of Ajax winger Antony.

The two English heavyweights are said to have made a ‘concrete’ attempt to sign the brilliant 22-year-old. The winger has impressed at the Johan Cruyff Arena this season under incoming United boss Erik Ten Hag. In 33 games in all competitions, he has scored 12 goals and contributed 10 assists.

Barcelona is also interested in signing Antony this summer. The attacker, though, is said to want a move to the Premier League. United remains the firm favourite for the Brazilian due to his friendship with Ten Hag.

After a poor season, the Red Devils are trying to improve their attacking options. It is believed that Ten Hag would like to bring the former Sao Paulo man to Old Trafford. Antony has become a fan favourite in the Dutch city after working with the 52-year-old for two seasons.

Jadon Sancho has struggled to make an impact since joining United from Borussia Dortmund last summer. Whereas Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have been linked with exits.

United certainly need another right-winger. Antony is familiar with Ten Hag’s style of play, making him a near-perfect match for their system.

Antony has two Eredivisie titles and 22 goals in 79 games for Ajax. He has also made his senior Brazil debut since arriving from Sao Paulo for £18.5 million in 2020.

Meanwhile, Liverpool has been keeping track of Antony’s growth since his debut in Brazil. According to the reports, Jurgen Klopp conducted “frequent follow-ups of the player’s growth.”

Mohamed Salah has yet to sign a new deal, and the fates of Takumi Minamino, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane are unknown.

Erik Ten Hag had nothing but praises for Antony.

Antony is a sneaky and speedy attacker who prefers to attack from the left side. He has a terrific eye for goal and the ability to pick out a pass. Ten Hag has previously praised him for his performances on the pitch.

“It would be a loss for Ajax if Antony left,” Ten Hag told De Telegraaf on Monday. “There is no one in the present squad who can take his place. He is a true professional.”

Ten Hag commented earlier this month regarding Antony’s impact on the Ajax team: “On the right, things are a little slower and less lively without Antony, which makes things more difficult for the team. The spaces grow much smaller after that.

Antony’s current Ajax contract expires in 2025, thus a deal for him could be costly. According to reports, any move may cost between £50 and £60 million.
