Liverpool missed the opportunity to go 3 points clear at the top of the table as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford by a resolute Manchester United side
As things stand, Liverpool occupy the top spot in the PL standings with 66 points from 27 games. Defending champions Manchester city closely follow the Reds with 65 points from as many games. Tottenham Hotspur, who are 3rd with 60 points could have come within 3 points of the table toppers but were defeated by Burnley at the weekend. Liverpool played pretty well and were arguably the better side on the day, but were unable to come up with the decisive final ball. Infact, they suffered the same problem when they hosted German champions Bayern Munich at Anfield in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie last week.
Liverpool struggles to find the back of the net when the likes of Firmino, Salah and Mane have an off day. And quite realistically, they cannot always be the ones respobsible for scoring goals. The rest of the team, and especially the midfield needs to pitch in with a few goals. The bench is also not good enough. The likes of Sturridge and Origi just do not score as many or as frequently or as Klopp would like them to.
This might very well be the differentiating factor between them and Manchester city, come he end of the season. The Cityzens have a very deep, and more importantly reliable squad. Guardiola can rely on the likes of Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus and the others to come up with goals when they are given the chance and they usual do so. The same, however cannot be said of the Reds’ substitutes.
The Reds need to replace some of their stars in the summer if they are to genuinely contend across multiple fronts next season. Among the first ones on this list will be Alberto Moreno. The Spaniard has completely lost his spot to Scottish left back Andy Robertson, who has made that spot all his own. Alberto Moreno was often criticized for his defensive displays, and Robertson is certainly better than him in that department. Playtime will be very hard to come by for Moreno if he chooses to stay.
Daniel Sturridge is another who might very well leave in the summer. There is no doubt about the quality that he possesses. However, his consistency is a matter of concern. And injuries haven’t helped his cause either.
Others who are highly likely to be let go are Adam Lallana, Simon Mignolet and Divock Origi.
Some of these stars are good enough to be in most team’s starting 11 but not in Liverpool’s. And their departure might very well be the best outcome for them as well as the club.
