According to the latest reports, Liverpool midfielder James Milner has admitted that he is hoping to get his new contract extension resolved sooner rather than later.
Everything seems to be going positively for Liverpool at the moment as Jurgen Klopp’s side sit at the summit of the Premier League table after ten games accumulating 28 points. The Merseyside giants are still the only unbeaten team in the League and dropped their first points of the season at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Reds also brushed aside their Belgian opponents Genk 4-0 in the Champions’ League Group Stage encounter and things are looking well for the defending European champions.
With Klopp preferring to use Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum in midfield, James Milner has not been given a regular opportunity for Liverpool. However, the 33-year-old veteran is still a very important squad player for Klopp as his versatility and hard work is something that adds a whole new dynamism to the Reds outfit.
Although Andrew Robertson is arguably the best left-back in the world, the Reds do not have a replacement for the Scotsman if he sustains an injury or needs a break. Fortunately, Klopp has Milner to rely on as the Englishman deputizes in the left-back role. Milner has been a great cover for Robertson and Klopp decides to use the veteran in the League Cup to defend the position.
Milner scored and produced an assist and a goal in the EFL Cup in Man of the Match performance and also produced a great assist and goal in the Premier League against Leicester. The great thing about Milner is that he can also play in a right-back role so if Trent Alexander Arnold is out injured; Klopp has a great option to rely upon.
But Milner is entering the final few months of his contract with Liverpool and the 33-year-old is hopeful that his contract extension is resolved sooner rather than later. When asked upon the ongoing details of whether he is being offered a new contract Milner said, “There have been talks and hopefully it gets resolved sooner rather than later”
Milner’s role is not only valuable to Liverpool in the squad but also in the dressing room as well and at Melwood as he is the senior-most player at Anfield under Klopp and his experience to the other youngsters could be vital.
I feel that Milner should be offered a contract extension but Liverpool should also look into the transfer market to bring in a new left-back.
