Liverpool vs Man United: Preview, Line-up and Prediction

Liverpool are all set to lock horns with Manchester United at the famous Anfield in Premier League fixture. Both sides are in the first two spots respectively and it’ll be an interesting contest from a neutral point of view. Manchester United are currently at the top with 36 points in the league.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are in the second position with 33 points from 17 games. Ole’s side is at the top with three points difference from the defending champions Liverpool. It’ll be vital three points for Liverpool on Sunday, which might boost them to continue their race for the title.

Manchester United are sitting pretty at the top courtesy of Pogba’s volley, which got them all three points against Burnley in the mid-week game. The Red Devils will come into this game with full confidence from the win and Ole’s side should try to make use of the advantage.

Meanwhile, the Reds come from a defeat against Southampton last week in Premier League. However, Jurgen Klopp’s side managed a win over the Villains in the FA Cup game. Liverpool had a comfortable 1-4 win over Aston Villa, which sends them to the next stage of the tournament

When and where?

Liverpool will host Manchester United at Anfield in the Premier League fixture on January 17th (10:00 PM IST).

Team News and Expected Line-up

Jurgen Klopp’s worry about his defensive setup continues as main centre-backs are still out injured. Brazilian defensive midfielder Fabinho is currently working as a centre-back alongside Jordan Henderson, whose natural position isn’t the same. Virgil Van Djik and Joe Gomez are yet to recover from their respective injuries.

While Joel Matip isn’t completely fit and will be doubtful for the game against United. Naby Keita is also on the doubt list, who is recovering from the knee injury. Summer signings Diogo Jota and Tsimikas are also out with injuries.

Expected Line-up: Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Andrew Robertson, Curtis Jones, Thiago Alcantara, Georginio Wijnaldum, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane

Manchester United will miss their long-time absentees Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, who are ruled out with injuries. While Victor Lindelof and French attacker Anthony Martial are doubtful for the Sunday clash against the Reds. Uruguayan Facundo Pellistri tested positive for COVID-19 a week ago and is not available.

Expected Line-up: David de Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Eric Bailly, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Fred, Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial

Head to Head stats: Liverpool vs Man United

United are ahead of Liverpool in the head to head competition over the years. In the last 33 games, United have won 15 games, lost 11, and drawn seven. Both these sides last met in the Premier League clash exactly a year ago. Dutch centre-back Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah scored a goal each to see victory over the Red Devils at Anfield with a scoreline of 2-0.

Mohamed Salah

The Egyptian forward will be a player to watch out for in the weekend game at Anfield. Salah is the current top goalscorer in the Premier League with thirteen goals. He’ll be a constant threat for the Liverpool defense without the key defensive pair of Van Dijk and Gomez.

He played a vital part in Liverpool’s victory over United at Anfield last season. Salah scored the winner late in the second-half to seal the win. Virgil Van Dijk was the other goalscorer, but will miss this time due to injury and will be a major miss for Klopp. Egyptian has been consistent with Mane and Firmino upfront for Reds.

Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes is currently in top form and no wonder he won the ‘Player of the Month’ award in the Premier League for December. The Portuguese have been fantastic for the Red Devils since arriving at Old Trafford last winter. Bruno Fernandes has managed not to divert himself from criticism on penalty goals.

The Portuguese international is the third-highest goalscorer so far in the Premier League this term. He has scored 11 goals for United and behind Spurs’ Son. Bruno also has seven assists to his name this season in seventeen appearances so far. It’ll be an interesting contest between Salah and Bruno Fernandes.

Final score Prediction

Both Liverpool and United need these three points for their race to the title. Liverpool’s form is quite disappointing recently having drawn two and lost one in their last three league games. While United have a good run of form and find themselves competing in the title race. It’ll be an entertaining contest for the neutrals and the game might end in a stalemate.

Final Score Prediction: Liverpool 1-1 Manchester United
