Makelele joins Swansea as assistant manager

Former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makelele has been appointed as the assistant manager of Premier League side Swansea.

Swansea has made some recent changes in the club’s coaching staffs in the recent weeks. Paul Clement was appointed as Swansea manager last week. On Wednesday, Claude Makelele was appointed an assistant manager at Swansea.

Former Chelsea midfielder will now work under new boss Paul Clement until the end of the season. Makelele said that he always wanted to return to Premier League as a coaching staff. He also admits that he is excited to work with Clement who is also his mentor.

On their official website, Swansea confirmed the news, stating that Makelele will work with the club until the end of the season.

“Swansea City is pleased to confirm that former French international Claude Makelele has joined the club’s coaching staff,” a statement on the club’s official website read.

“The 43-year-old, who has signed a deal until the end of the season, reunites with head coach Paul Clement, who he worked with during his playing stint at Chelsea and as a coach with Paris Saint-Germain.”

“The former Real Madrid, Chelsea and PSG midfielder has been named as an assistant coach. Makelele will get his first taste of the Liberty on Saturday when he’s in the dug-out for the Swans’ Premier League fixture with Arsenal.”

Along with Makelele, Swansea has added some other new members also to their coaching staff. Clement succeeded Bob Bradley as Swansea manager last week and recruited Nigel Gibbs and Karl Halabi from Tottenham’s coaching staff.

Makelele revealed that he asked Clement a week ago if he could get a chance at the club.

“I am really excited to be here and I am happy to start working at Swansea,” Makelele said.

“Paul is my mentor. He has taught me a lot of things in my time working with him.”

“When I heard he was back working in the Premier League, I phoned him. I asked if I could help him at Swansea.”

“Paul has given me the opportunity to come back to the Premier League. And I’m very grateful because I’ve really missed it,” he said.

“I know him very well and he knows me too. I think I have a lot to give, and hopefully, I can help Paul and Swansea.”

Former Chelsea defensive midfielder spent five years at Stamford Bridge from 2003 to 2008. He has also won two Premier League titles with the Blues.
