The Premier League giants, Man City, are all set to spend a big amount once again after spending on Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres this summer. Pep Guardiola is again back into the market in search of a solid defender. The Citizens were behind Napoli’s Koulibaly in this transfer window. However, the asking price for the highly-rated centre-back is too high.
Manchester City was also trying to rope in Sevilla’s solid centre-back Kounde as well. The young central defender did have a good season under Julien Lopetegui. He was one of the key members in the Europa League winning squad. Sevilla is not ready to sell their centre-back this season and City have to spend more than their limit if they want to sign him.
Pep Guardiola struggled particularly last season with a lot of injuries. The injuries were especially at the back of their central defenders. Pep’s main men at the back suffered an injury set back. Aymeric Laporte and John Stones both suffered a long-term injury. This forced Guardiola to play Fernandinho at the back as centre-back.
Manchester City lost out on the title last season mainly because of this particular reason. Pep and his side entered the summer transfer window with a solo-goal of signing a strong central defender. They did succeed by signing Nathan Ake early in the window. Bournemouth was sent to relegation last season with poor performance. Manchester City utilized this opportunity to sign the talented English defender.
Benfica open to accept Otamendi
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are in talks with Benfica to sign 20-year-old defender Ruben Dias with Otamendi going the other way. While Sevilla defender Kounde is not completely ruled out of City plans. Manchester City made a €55m bid to Sevilla for Kounde earlier this week. However, Sevilla gently rejected the bid to secure his services.
Citizens have added Otamendi in their bid to sign Ruben Dias from Benfica. The bid might be worth around €55m, which is quite the same bid rejected by Sevilla for Kounde. The experienced Argentinian defender might leave City for a Portuguese outfit. Benfica is ready to accept Otamendi plus cash for youngster Ruben Dias.
Nicolas Otamendi also suffered a setback last season with a minor injury, with his fellow central defenders. Otamendi could possibly add experience to Benfica’s defensive setup. The Portuguese club recently signed Jan Vertonghen on a free transfer, after Spurs released him this summer. Ruben Dias is one of the bright prospects in European football at the moment.
Pep Guardiola is quite happy with the central defender’s performance for Benfica recently. He has been a wall for his National side as well. Jose Mourinho is also keen to land the Portuguese defender as well. Spurs might be happy with Ruben Dias’ addition to their squad. Vertonghen’s vacant position will be something to be taken care of.
Perfect mix of Koulibaly and Kounde
Ruben Dias is one of the most wanted defenders in the Europe circuit. He has the age on his side and clubs won’t mind investing in young talent like him. Pep Guardiola has seen the light in him and wants to land him as soon as possible. The Spaniard is okay to sacrifice the Argentine defender to bring Ruben Dias to Etihad Stadium.
Dias would be the ideal signing for Pep Guardiola. He is the perfect combination of both their prime targets. Both Koulibaly and Kounde deal at the moment not intact. However, if City manages to sign this youngster, it would be a game-changer. The youngster can become the wall that Pep wants in his side.
As per reports, Benfica has accepted this initial offer from City. The announcement is expected to be done within this week. Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias can form a good pair in the heart of City defense. It would be interesting to see which pair Pep chooses. Pep has two choices, he can either go with Ake and Dias or Dias and Laporte. Both are good combinations.
The arrival of Portugal defender might well be the farewell for Spanish centre-back Eric Garcia. Barcelona keen to sign the young central defender from Manchester City. City attacker Bernardo Silva can also put in a word with his fellow national mate to sign for City. But, that’s not required with Dias already keen to play at Premier League.
