Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s goalkeeping dilemma continues. Man United has a lot of options and might sell one more this summer.
Manchester United are looking to swim through the transfer window with deals that may sustain the hit of the pandemic. The Red Devils have not yet made any signings and the fans have taken to social media to express their frustration.
But there is a silver lining to all this. Recently, Dean Henderson signed a new contract until 2025 for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. At the same time, Manchester United’s captain has been declared ‘guilty’ for aggravated assault.
Though Maguire may escape jail time, Manchester United will look to bring in more optimism in the club at the moment. The immediate response is more signings, which will need money. As a result, the team is ready to ax Sergio Romero to make way for more money, with Everton interested.
Manchester United have a serious decision to make
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has entrusted tremendous belief on David De Gea. Though the goalkeeper has deteriorated relatively after the EURO and the abysmal World Cup performance, he keeps the Manchester United No.1 spot consistently.
On the other hand, they have Dean Henderson, the 2-year-old who has risen to prominence at Sheffield this season. Chris Wilder initially wanted there this season too but went for Bournemouth’s Aaron Ramsdale instead. With a fresh contract, it is certain De Gea has serious competition.
Then there’s Romero – a silent, humble and consistent stopper who does the job without any expectations. When United legend Wayne Rooney returned to Old Trafford, the only line of defense which stopped his ludicrous free-kick, was Sergio Romero.
Sergio Romero – competition for Pickford?
Romero played 16 games in all competitions, with 11 clean sheets and a save percentage of 85%. Though the performance of the other 2 have been remarkable, Romero has been exceptional in whatever game time he has been rewarded.
However, he is 33 – not a very ripe age for a goalkeeper to continue for a long time. After Henderson’s arrival, his game time looks over. Ancelotti, however, needs a perfect second fiddle to pressurize Pickford for competition.
Jordan Pickford has not been as sharp as he was in the Nations League. In fact, he smiling, holding the ball after conceding a goal went viral, criticizing his mentality. Ancelotti who lifted Chelsea’s spirits after Mourinho’s departure, winning the title and Champions League with them. He, of all, knows who to boost mentalities. (Stats source: Fbref )
Romero is valued at £2.52m by Transfermarkt. But given his form, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will stress for atleast £5 million for the Argentine. The Norwegian has focused his transfer policy in favor of youth and the 33-year-old may thereby be sold.
Everton is under, so to say, reconstruction. Carlo Ancelotti initially wanted Ciro Immobile at Goodison Park but has been working on back-ups too. Allan from Napoli has been agreed upon on €25 million + addons, according to Fabrizio Romano.
In fact, Columbian star James Rodriguez may also be on his way to Goodison Park. It is clear Carlo Ancelotti has a plan. Perhaps, if and when a move happens the deal will profit both Manchester United as well as Everton. One will have a Pickford competition, the other will accommodate Henderson.
