Chris Wilder’s side is eager to keep Dean Henderson on loan despite interest in Bournemouth goalkeeper, Ramsdale.
Ole Gunner Solksjaer will feel hard done by for the shot-stopper seems to be recruit option at Sheffield United. The 23-year-old is also on the verge of getting a new contract but won’t be counting his minutes at Manchester United just yet. Dean kept 14 clean sheets in 34 appearances in between the sticks, with a 75% above save percentage. He helped the club finished 8th in the Premier League against all odds. Thus, The Blades remain keen on his loan extension.
Even though they are linked with another fascinating player in Ramsdale, they want to see Dean progress here. The Bournemouth keeper got relegated with the side but has been defined with brilliance. The 22-year-old was not the first choice initially but Eddie Howe gave him the opportunity. He made the most of it by contributing solidly but unfortunately couldn’t keep his team-up. Ramsdale is set to join the side but with the club reluctant to let Dean go, he may get a bench-warming job.
United’s situation with Dean
His Parent club has some issues at his favored position. Goalkeeper David De Gea is surely out of his best and costing the side with cheap goals. The Spain International only kept one clean sheet more than Dean even though he has played more games. His save percentage is also no better than him. It is true that numbers don’t entirely define a player but David’s season has been lackluster. He conceded through glaring errors in their FA Cup semifinal tie with Chelsea side by side facing disappointment in the Europa League at the same period of the competition.
So, Ole may finally give Dean first-team opportunity axing his present number one. But the problem is it is not that easy. De Gea had been the immaculate man with gloves for a decade for them. Nobody could ever forget his sensational saves to lift his side from danger. Or his character to give an arr of confidence. Also, he has a contract running until 2023 and would be super expensive for any club to bid on should United sell.
This will also be too much for Dean to handle with more burden coming on his shoulder at such an age. However, he has shown he has the potential to make it in the future. His quick reflexes added by positional awareness have made him a hard keeper to beat. Dean was blessed with a terrific defense too but nevertheless he has never failed to impress. Also with United qualifying for the Champions League, he may help the side in crucial stages of the competition with no place for errors if the loan isn’t extended.
Competition with Ramsdale
But Dean is on verge of a contract extension with Sheffield as per ESPN. Chris Wilder won’t wish to let him go away after a stunning campaign last time. He may get forced to stay intact and swap timings with Ramsdale if the latter arrives in summer. This will mean extreme competition between two potential based keepers.
However, this competition will only aid both of them in their spot. The example we can take from FC Barcelona’s campaign in 2014/15. While vastly experienced Claudio Bravo set himself with league duties, Ter Stegen held the gloves for the team’s journey to the Champions League title. The Spanish giant created this scenario to help the German keeper progress to become the number one eventually. We may see something similar at Sheffield too.
Chris Wilder’s side are planning for life without the man they love to call ‘Deano’ but are expecting to have him for at least a season. Henderson may also stay put in the sense that his progress won’t stop. He’s a fan favorite, a factor that can play a part to be in Sheffield family a little longer. One thing is certain that he will grab more game minutes then Ramsdale if not injuries become a villain. However, this isn’t at all an issue for him.
For Manchester United, its time that they keep their faith in De Gea. The keeper may be fluffing his saves but still a renowned name in his position. He still has it all to get tested in varied situations and come up with something decisive. David will feel to get his best back with the United squad improving than ever. The signing of Bruno Fernandes has helped Solskjaer to construct a plan to work on. Hence, United are sparkling amidst recent disappointments.
The Red Devils will choose to extend Henderson’s loan than with another experienced keeper like Sergio Romero as back up. With the chance that Dean won’t find more playing time at Old Trafford, it is better he keeps his place at Sheffield and simultaneously progress to be a future Manchester United shot-stopper.
Twelfth Man Opinion
According to us, Ole needs no rush to have Dean in their ranks for the new campaign. It is better he enjoys another year with Sheffield and replicates his performance of the previous seasons. That will help his growth and slowly develop him to a goalkeeper of taking big challenges. Chris Wilder is a fascinating manager to take notes from and used it in the future when he plays for the club from Manchester.
David De Gea can have his moment now to prove his worth again. He has shown before that he can replace tough times with magnificent performances. Fans would hope that he starts doing it as soon as the new season kicks off otherwise their patience would run out. At the moment, it is not a matter for United to stress about.
