Manchester United was handed a reality check following a tame draw at the hands of Southampton on Sunday. The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 score on the South coast. They had started the season on a bright note with resounding success against Leeds United last week.

The Premier League side has roped in Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in the ongoing transfer window so far. While they are in the market for a holding midfielder, they will have to sanction some sales to fund the move. They have only managed to send Andreas Pereira and Brandon Williams on loan deals.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been backed in the transfer window with the side in desperate need of silverware. There has been a sense of progress in the club following consecutive top-four finishes.

Former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville firmly believes that Manchester United should hijack Manchester City’s attempts to sign Harry Kane. The 46-year-old claims that the club has plenty of deadwood to sell that can spruce up the funds to put in a bid for the unsettled striker.

The legendary right-back believes Manchester United is still short to compete against the likes of their Premier League rivals. He claims that Harry Kane could be the final piece of the puzzle, and it is in the club’s history to move for the best player in the country.

Neville feels the club could do without the services of Anthony Martial, Daniel James, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata. He hopes the sales can reduce the wage bill and spruce up the transfer budget.

“I’m struggling to understand why Manchester United aren’t going that extra step [in] this transfer window. Sancho’s £70million was last year’s money,” Neville said on Monday Night Football. He also added the team could potentially face a crisis regarding a striker next season.

Neville added that with Martial and Edinson Cavani leaving in the near future, it only leaves Mason Greenwood in the striker’s position. He fails to understand why Manchester United is waiting for their departures to sanction a move for a striker.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has asserted that the likes of Anthony Martial and Daniel James are in his plans. The Frenchman was lambasted for yet another poor outing and was subbed off in the second half against Southampton.

On the other hand, Daniel James was considering his exit from the team, however, Solskjaer has convinced him to remain with the club. The winger is a backup player in the squad but is still struggling to make it into the team in the long-time absence of Marcus Rashford.

Jesse Lingard recently re-joined the club following a six-month loan spell with West Ham. The Hammers have expressed their interest in bringing him back but are unable to match Manchester United’s valuation. Juan Mata extended his stay with the club recently by signing a new contract.
