According to the reports from Manchester, Jose Mourinho’s side are set to finalize a deal for their winger in the next 48 hours.
Manchester United winger Memphis Depay will be leaving the club in this January transfer window, according to various sources. The 22-year-old has failed to live up to the expectations as Old Trafford and has asked for a transfer.
Depay joined Manchester United last season from PSV for a reported fee of £25 million on a four-year contract. The Netherland international was bought to the club by his former national team coach Louis Van Gaal. He was given the famous number 7 jersey at Man United, previously worn by some of the legends like David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. But Depay failed miserably to make an impact in Premier League.
In his second season with Man United, he found himself demoted to the bench by Jose Mourinho. The Dutch winger has featured in this season’s Premier League campaign for just 20 minutes. With the likes of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in the team, Depay couldn’t get enough opportunities in Jose Mourinho’s side. Considering all these reasons, the players himself has handed over a transfer request to the manager. The latest reports suggest that Depay is on the verge of joining Ligue 1 side, Lyon.
Mirror reports that Lyon had a bid of £13m for Depay, rejected by Manchester United. It is understood that Lyon will return with an improved offer for Depay so as to convince Manchester United. It is very much clear that Jose Mourinho won’t be accepting a cheap offer for such a talented player.
In addition to Lyon, Premier League side Everton also showed interest in Depay. But Ronald Koeman wanted to sign Depay on loan and wasn’t interested in a permanent transfer.
Jose Mourinho recently admitted that his side will regret about selling a player like Depay. The Portuguese manager also said that he will be happier if Memphis Depay decides to stay.
“We have a lot of players in Memphis’ position,” said Jose Mourinho.
“So it is not easy for anyone of them to play. I was informed by the club that there is a chance Memphis could leave.”
“From a human point of view, I cannot stop him from leaving when he is not playing under me.”
“If he is staying, I would be more than happy because he is a fantastic guy and a very good player.”
“I feel so sorry that I am not giving him opportunities to play. A player of his age needs to be playing matches.”
“If he leaves, we wish him all the best for the future because he is a fantastic kid.”
