Manchester United chase former Real Madrid midfielder as a replacement for Fellaini

Manchester United have added to their shortlist, former Real Madrid and Chelsea midfielder as a replacement for Marouane Fellaini.

The former Blues star joined Saudi Arabia club Al Jazira in April but terminated his contract after a few months with the hopes of joining a top European club during the winter transfer window. However, while Lassana Diarra is certainly experienced, there have been no takers until now with rumors that Manchester United have approached the Frenchman’s entourage over a potential move.

According to reports from and SFR Sport, the Red Devils want a replacement for Marouane Fellaini who wants to leave the club. The Belgian international has spent nearly four years at Old Trafford since arriving from Everton has become a key player under both Van Gaal and even Jose Mourinho.

However, now it looks like things are coming to an end for the 30-year-old and Mourinho wants to bring in someone as a replacement. While Lassana Diarra won’t be a permanent replacement for the Belgian, he will certainly bring in a lot of experience and give the club time to look for someone more permanent. But despite that PSG are also in the running and have an agreement in principle with the 32-year-old, although a deal on paper is yet to be fixed.

Other than that, AC Milan, Fenerbache, and Galatasaray are all interested and have already contacted the defender midfielder’s representatives regarding a potential move. Despite that Mourinho does have the edge if he really wants to bring the former Real Madrid, Arsenal and Chelsea star to the club.

The France international once played under Mourinho, both at Chelsea and Real Madrid and is very keen on a reunion with his former manager. “I know Mourinho well. I have enjoyed some great times with him. He is a coach I really like,” revealed the 32-year-old.

Author’s take:

Lassana Diarra would be a good signing, however, he is certainly not a long-term solution. Either way, the club will have to find a new defensive midfielder and while Diarra does bring in immense experience from his time in the La Liga and even England, he’s already 32 years old. However, there is the added bonus that he is a free-agent and thus no transfer fee will have to be paid.
