The Spaniard is showing no signs to sign a new contract and looks set to leave Old Trafford.
Tough time seem to be arriving for Manchester United. The arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was meant to bring old glory days back at Old Trafford. However Solskjaer’s tenure as permanent boss started with a defeat. The Red Devils look unlikely to finish in top 4 and are struggling to extend the contracts of David De Gea, Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford. With Herrera set to leave Old Trafford, Dominic Matteo has suggested Manchester United to sign this Chelsea star.
Former Liverpool defender Dominic Matteo has told Manchester United to sign N’Golo Kante as a replacement of Ander Herrera. N’Golo Kante, who lifted the PFA Players’ Player of the Year trophy in 2017, could join Manchester United in a stunning switch as Herrera looks set to seal a deal with the French giants. The Spaniard has been widely linked with an exit from Old Trafford after failing to agree a new deal with the club, and his perfect replacement could already be playing in England. Herrera has made 187 appearances for United across his five campaigns in English football. Herrera was holding out for weekly wages of £200,000, but United were not willing to go above £170,000 plus bonuses. Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward elected to activate a single-season option on Herrera’s initial Old Trafford deal last summer instead of agreeing an improved contract; and then failed to tie the 29-year-old down.
Matteo said on the Man On The Street show, “[N’Golo] Kante’s been playing in that position for Chelsea. But it doesn’t look like he’s going to get a game there in front of Jorginho. For United, he would definitely be top of the list.” Kante has played a crucial role for the Blues since joining for £32 million after winning the title with Leicester. However, the World Cup winner has been moved away from his favoured role this season – with Maurizio Sarri preferring Jorginho in a central role.
Ex-Scotland international Matteo added about Kante: “He’s probably the best holding midfielder in world football. If United play Herrera and [Nemanja] Matic together, there’s not enough creativity. One player should sit and control things as the rest of them get forward. The top sides need to get players in the box.” However, if United do decide to sign Kante then they will be facing competition from Manchester City. City have been monitoring Kante’s situation at Chelsea and are ready to submit a bid if the midfielder becomes unhappy at the club.
Given Chelsea’s transfer ban and Kante recently signing contract extension, it would be tough for United to lure the Frenchmen. United should look at the likes of Declan Rice to replace Ander Herrera.
