The Atletico Madrid star has admitted to his teammates about his desire to leave club.
Manchester City’s dramatic Champions League exit has given Pep Guardiola an idea of which areas of the team should he amend. Fernandinho didn’t start the much important game for City as Guardiola was concerned about his fitness.
The Brazilian has been injured this season and his absence cost City dear points this season. Fernandinho will turn 34 next season and Guardiola wants a replacement of the former Shakthar player. With the likes of Saul Niguez and N’Golo Kante being linked it seems City are in talks of signing this Atletico Madrid star.
Manchester City have reportedly opened talks with Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri about a summer transfer after agreeing to match the player’s exit clause. City boss Pep Guardiola is believed to be looking for a long-term replacement in midfield for 33-year-old Fernandinho, with fellow Atletico midfielders Saul Niguez and Thomas Partey touted as potential targets. According to Spanish publication Cadena Ser, however, Guardiola has set his sights on a third of the club’s midfielders – Rodri. The source says that the 22-year-old is tipped to become the long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets in the Spanish national team, and adds that Gaurdiola sees him performing a similar role for the Manchester club.
The holding midfielder only arrived Wanda Metropolitano from Villa Real last summer, but has already established himself as a key player under Diego Simeone, featuring in 38 games across all competitions, and City boss Pep Guardiola is said to be a huge admirer. Despite having four years left on his deal, Rodri seem to have told his teammates about his desire of leaving Spain.
Fernandinho, 33, has been crucial to City’s plans since arriving from Shakhtar Donetsk in June 2013. The Brazilian featured in 190 league games and helped them win two Premier League titles and four League Cups. However, he won’t be able to keep playing at the top level for long, and the club are in need of a long-term replacement. Guardiola believes Rodri is a perfect replacement of the Brazilian.
Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez, West Ham’s Declan Rice, Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele, Wolves’ Ruben Neves and Schalke’s Sebastien Rudy all are alternate targets if City fail to lure Rodri.
City have prioritised that position in the last three transfer windows but have been thwarted in bids for Jorginho, Fred and Frenkie De Jong. Manchester City will be hoping to clear out the deal and not repeat the past mistakes. Guardiola has been frustrated with the club missing out on replacements on Fernandinho. The Spaniard must be hoping the club prefers replacement of Fernandinho as the biggest priority in the summer.
