Manchester City News: Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy was arrested after allegations of rape and sexual assaults were put up against him. As a result, the player was suspended by the club.
Mendy was roped in at the 2017-18 transfer window for a hefty price tag from AS Monaco. However, the French International has not justified the price tag so far in his tenure. His career in England has mostly been highlighted by injuries.
Over the course of time, Pep Guardiola went on to play Oleksandr Zinchenko as a left-back. Moreover, he even played Joao Cancelo as an inverted left-back, leaving Mendy as the third choice.
The Frenchman had a stellar pre-season this time around. He started in the Community Shield fixture and in the Premier League opener against Spurs as well. With the allegations out in the open, it is hard to say where Mendy’s future lies with the club.
Following his arrest, Mendy was informed that he would be placed in the VP (Vulnerable Prisoners) section of the HMP Altcourse. But, the player thought that he was part of the VIP section.
When the situation was clarified and cleared, Mendy was unhappy with the treatment being given to him. He has been slapped with five counts of rape and sexual assault on people over the age of 16. The incidents reportedly took place between October 2020 to last month.
‘He had a rude awakening when he saw the cell and realised who he was going to be mixing with. He wasn’t happy and it was a very sobering experience for him.’ a source told The Sun. The 27-year-old was denied bail after a hearing in court.
Mendy will appear at the Chester crown court on September 10 to make his voice heard. Manchester City and Pep Guardiola will focus on their season after already having made the decision to suspend him.
The Cityzens now have no authentic fullback to play on the left flank. Oleksandr Zinchenko is a make-shift left-back with his primary role being as a midfielder. On the other hand, while Joao Cancelo played the role to perfection in the first half of the season, he faded out as the inverted full-back in the latter half.
The defending Premier League Champions made a deadline day move for Sporting Lisbon’s Nuno Mendes but lost out to PSG. The Ligue 1 giants secured the services of the youngster on an initial loan deal with a clause to buy next season.
Following a surprising series of defeats to Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City has bounced back in style. Despite failing to sign Harry Kane or Cristiano Ronaldo, they achieved remarkable success with the formula of Ferran Torres as the striker and Gabriel Jesus as the winger.
5-0 wins against Norwich City and Arsenal on the trot have set the tone for the season. They have recently tied down Ruben Dias and Ederson to long-term contracts with the club as well.
