Manchester City news: Pep Guardiola has compared Erling Haaland’s goal in their win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League to a goal Johan Cruyff scored for Barcelona in 1973.
The Premier League giants pulled off a late comeback to earn all three points against Borussia Dortmund after the German side had gone ahead through Jude Bellingham in the 56th minute.
John Stones restored parity in the 80th minute and Haaland capped off their comeback with a goal – an absolutely great one at that – four minutes later.
Joao Cancelo produced a sensational cross into the box and Haaland leaped to volley it home to guide Man City to another three points.
Manchester City news: Erling Haaland’s goal similar to Johan Cruyff’s goal in 1973, says Guardiola
Speaking after the match, Guardiola said that Haaland’s goal against Dortmund reminded him of a goal Cruyff scored for Barcelona in 1973.
“Maybe the people who know me, you know the influence Johan Cruyff had in my life,” Guardiola said after the game.
“As a person, the education, manager, mentor, everything. Johan Cruyff years ago scored in the Camp Nou an incredible goal against Atletico Madrid and it was quite, quite, quite similar to Erling Haaland.
“The moment he scored I thought about Johan Cruyff, it was quite similar. It was a really good one.”
Guardiola also noted that the finish from Haaland was exceptional and so was Cancelo’s assist.
Haaland joined Man City in the 2022 summer transfer window. He left Dortmund after two-and-a-half seasons at the German club.
Haaland has instantly hit the ground running at Man City. He has already racked up 13 goals for Man City from just nine appearances for the English side.
He has scored 10 goals in the Premier League including two back-to-back hat-tricks and a brace. The Norwegian international marked his Premier League debut by scoring both of City’s goals in their 2-0 win over West Ham.
He scored his first hat-trick for Man City when they came from behind to beat Crystal Palace. After trailing by two goals, Bernardo Silva pulled one back before Haaland scored three to seal the win.
He followed that up with another hat-trick as Man City defeated Nottingham Forest 6-0. Haaland has also scored three goals for Man City from two matches in the Champions League.
