Man City news: Manager Pep Guardiola has warned his team they cannot win the Champions League if they rely solely on Erling Haaland.
Man City signed Haaland from Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window. The Premier League champions triggered the release clause in Haaland’s Dortmund contract. The Norwegian international has signed a five-year contract with Man City.
Haaland has instantly hit the ground running at Man City. The 22-year-old has already hit double figures, scoring 10 goals from just six Premier League matches.
Haaland already has two Premier League hat-tricks for Man City. He scored those in their 4-2 win over Crystal Palace and 6-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest. He has also registered one assist for Man City.
Man City news: Guardiola says Man City cannot rely on Erling Haaland if they are to win the Champions League and Premier League
Guardiola has now insisted Man City cannot solely rely on Haaland to deliver the goods. He also lavished praise on Haaland, who he said has ‘special quality’ and can solve their problems in important matches.
Guardiola, however, also stressed the need to play well if they are to win the Champions League and Premier League.
“I always have believed, but if we rely only on Erling’s shoulders, we are not going to win the Champions League. What we have to do is play well, create chances to help him score goals, and hopefully, we can do it,” the Man City manager said.
Guardiola added: “He has a special quality and in the important games maybe he can solve the problems we have, definitely, but if we don’t play well we’re not going to win games in the Champions League or Premier League.”
Meanwhile, Man City have had a fine start to their Premier League 22/23 season. They sit second in the points table, only behind league leaders Arsenal. The defending champions have 14 points from six matches, having won four and drawn two.
Man City defeated West Ham, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest. And they shared points in their games against Newcastle United and Aston Villa.
Man City begin their Champions League 22/23 campaign next. They have been drawn alongside Sevilla, Borussia Dortmund and F.C Copenhagen in Group G.
City faces Sevilla in their first game of the Champions League 22/23 season. They take on the Spanish side in an away fixture at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium. The match kicks off at 12:30 am Indian Standard Time, on September 6th.
Man City then host Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium in their next game in the English Premier League.
