Manchester City News: Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez is close to agreeing on a deal in principle to extend his contract with Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola has been impressed by the former Leicester City attacker’s progress. The Manchester City board has already been in talks with the player and his agent.
There are many other factors that have also influenced his decision to stay in England. As reported by the Sun, Riyad Mahrez is ready to accept an offer worth £160k a week which would add three more years to his present contract.
He would also have the chance to extend it for a further one year. It has been reported that he may prefer to finish the rest of his career with Pep Guardiola’s side.
Mahrez joined Manchester City in a £60m deal from Leicester City in 2018. Since then, he has been slowly establishing himself as the key player in Guardiola’s starting XI.
He has already scored 63 goals in 189 appearances for his club. He has already bragged about seven titles as well and it has further boosted his confidence.
Surprisingly he has lifted three Premier League titles in seven years. Guardiola was full of praise for Mahrez’s abilities to light the stage in key games.
As reported by the Goal, he said: “I try to push him a lot. We struggle together because I know the quality he has and he’s a player I admire for the fact he handles the pressure. He likes to play in the biggest stages. It’s difficult to find that and players like him.”
The Algerian winger possesses cleverness in his finishing and quick control over the ball. Also his ability to cut in swiftly freezes the opposition full-backs.
Manchester City board has already signed Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez this summer. Both the strikers could compete for the starting spot up front.
This means, that the lone position that needs competition is the wing spot. However, Manchester City has already agreed to let Sterling leave and that could help Mahrez in further fixing his place in the starting XI.
Also, it is highly unlikely that Manchester City will sign any winger as they have already signed a striker, and a defensive midfielder, and have their eyes on a full-back.
Marc Cucurella could be the next player to join Guardiola’s side. Everything seems to be going in Mahrez’s favor right now.
