Chelsea needs to move fast to secure their key transfer target, as Manchester City has made the first offer.
According to Diario AS reports, Citizens have made the formal offer of a €94m including addon bonuses. Atletico Madrid is holding on the €120m release clause in Jose Gimenez’s contract. They are in good condition financially so they will not be considering any offer below the release clause.
Chelsea interested in Gimenez but no official offer has been made yet
Chelsea is also looking to strengthen their defense in this transfer window. They have signed Thiago Silva on a free transfer from Paris Saint Germain but are expecting few departures in defense. Last season’s emerging player Fikayo Tomori is attracting interest from Everton, with a loan offer is on the table already.
Last season Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori played most of the minutes in a central defensive role. In the first league fixture against Brighton, Zouma started alongside Andreas Christiansen.
Thiago Silva is expected to play with Zouma once he returns to full fitness. That will leave Antonio Rudiger and Christiansen as squad option players alongside Cesar Azpiliqueta.
There is no imminent need for a new defender at the Stamford Bridge. Gimenez will improve Chelsea’s defense a lot but it is unlikely of them to make a move for the Uruguayan. There were reports of Chelsea scouting the 25-year-old defender in July but no official contact or offer has been made from the Blues.
Chelsea has already spent more than €200m in this transfer window to bring in seven players. Big names like Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, and Ben Chilwell arrived at Stamford Bridge for a substantial fee.
They are also looking to sign Declan Rice in this window for a club-record fee, which will be a big statement from them. Rennes goalkeeper Eduoard Mendy also linked with a €30m transfer move to Chelsea.
Manchester City needs a new defender to challenge Liverpool for the title
Last season Manchester City ended on 2nd position in the league table, 18 points behind Liverpool. The main reason for that big point difference was goals conceded. Citizens managed to score 102 goals, more than anyone in last season but conceded 2 goals more than Liverpool.
Consistent injuries to John Stone and Nicolas Otamendi were considerable reasons behind that. Defensive midfielders Fernandinho and Rodri played alongside Aymeric Laporte on some occasions. It was clear that Pep Guardiola will sign a big name defender in this transfer window.
Manchester City signed Nathan Ake from relegated side Bournemouth for a transfer fee of £42 million. It will be a big signing for the Citizen’s defense, as Ake is a proven top-quality defender in the league.
But Guardiola recently stated that Ake will be playing in different positions as the condition arrives. Ake is capable of playing on the left-back position also, which City are struggling to improve due to lack of fitness from Benjamin Mendy. So City fans will be seeing Ake on the left side of the defense on most of the occasions.
So City needs a new central defender to partner with Aymeric Laporte. The transfer offer of £94 million for Gimenez shows their genuine interest in the player. Napoli Central defender Kalidou Koulibaly is also one of the top transfer targets for Manchester City.
