Manchester City transfer news: The Cityzens are close to signing Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji.
Akanji has been a consistent performer for Dortmund since joining from FC Basel in the January window of 2018. He has played 119 league games for the German club so far, scoring four goals.
The 27-year-old defender helped the BVB win the DFB-Pokal and DFL-SuperCup so far. He is also a key member of the Swiss national team and was part of the squad that reached the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2020.
However, Akanji has entered the final year of his current contract at Signal Iduna Park. The BVB could look to cash in for him this summer as opposed to letting him leave for free in 2023.
Manchester City transfer news: Manuel Akanji on the verge of joining the Cityzens
According to journalist David Ornstein, Manchester City are close to reaching an agreement with Borussia Dortmund to sign Manuel Akanji.
The Cityzens are optimistic that a deal for the Swiss international will be stuck for around €17.5 million. Akanji will become a free agent next summer but the Manchester outfit have pounced on signing him this window.
However, the Switzerland international could struggle for his game time at the Etihad Stadium as the Cityzens already have Ruben Dias, Ayermic Laporte, John Stones, and Nathan Ake as senior centre-backs in their squad.
Manchester City have spent £109.80 million on signing new players this window. Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips, Sergio Gomez, and Stefan Ortega have arrived at the Etihad Stadium so far. Apart from Akanji, Pep Guardiola is unlikely to approach any other player before the deadline.
What will Manuel Akanji bring to Etihad Stadium?
Valued at £27 million by TransferMarkt, Akanji is a powerful defender who is comfortable playing as a right back or in the heart of the defense. His key strengths are his concentration and passing skills, along with his tackling.
He played 26 Bundesliga games last season, scoring one goal. According to WhoScored, he averaged 1.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, and 2.1 clearances in the league last term. Akanji also completed 90.6 percent of his attempted passes during the 2021-22 Bundesliga season.
Manchester City have started the season brightly, winning three of their opening four league games. They are currently second in the PL table, two points behind leaders Arsenal. The Cityzens will next lock horns against Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa respectively in their upcoming league games.
Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund is currently fifth in the Bundesliga table with nine points from four games. They will next go up against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the league before facing F.C. Copenhagen in the UEFA Champions League group stage game on September 9.
