Dutch forward Cody Gakpo started his football journey at the academy of EVV Eindhoven. However, after one year, he was roped in by PSV.
The forward then rose through the ranks and was promoted to the reserve side of PSV. He produced consistent performances for Jong PSV and was given his senior team debut in 2018. Gakpo then gradually established himself as a starter in the PSV squad.
After playing a lot of matches for the Netherlands youth teams, the PSV forward made his senior team debut in 2021. Cody Gakpo got the Dutch footballer of the year in the 2021-22 season as he scored 21 goals in 47 matches.
Manchester United Finalising Cody Gakpo Deal
Now according to a report from the Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Manchester United are about to “define an agreement” for Cody Gakpo in the upcoming January transfer window.
After joining Manchester United, Erik ten Hag asked the board to sign some specific players who can help to play his specific style. Although United managed to land almost all of their targets, Cody Gakpo remained one of the names that the Red Devils failed to sign.
Instead of Gakpo, United roped in Ajax winger Antony. The Brazilian winger has since then established himself in the right wing and is giving consultant performances. Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo has also got a great start to his season. The Dutch international has netted nine goals and dished out eleven assists in the Eredivisie so far.
This is by far the best start for Cody Gakpo and now the Red Devils have once again reignited their interest in him. Interestingly due to PSV’s economic issues, Gakpo will be available for only £25 million. This is a very affordable price for a player of Gakpo’s quality.
Earlier Gakpo confirmed in an interview about United’s failed attempt. “I was close to leaving PSV. I spoke to Erik ten Hag a few times at Manchester United, in the end, the deal didn’t go through… and it was a shame,” told Gakpo.
Apart from United, Southampton and Leeds were also very close to signing the forward in the last transfer window. But Gakpo decided to stay at PSV for the time being. But now according to reports, he is finally ready to make a move out from his current club in January.
Before the transfer window, Gakpo will be a part of the Netherlands team. The forward will start for the Netherlands in the Qatar World Cup 2022. Big performances in the perennial event will rise his stocks.
Manchester United will face Aston Villa in their next match.
