The 28-year-old midfielder moved to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund this summer. Recently there were reports in Germany criticizing the player for his performances in Dortmund. Since moving to Manchester United, the CEO of Borussia Dortmund, Hans-Joachim Watzke has been complaining about him.

According to German media outlet BILD, Mkhitaryan has responded to the criticism made by Watzke. The Armenian midfielder said that he didn’t move to Manchester United for money. The former Shakhtar Donetsk player admits that he would have joined other clubs if it was about money.

Hans-Joachim Watzke

Mkhitaryan said: “I cannot understand that, and that’s wrong. If it were just about money, I would have transferred from Shakhtar Donetsk to Anzhi Makhachkala and not to Borussia Dortmund. But I did not want that. I wanted to develop further.”

He also said that Manchester United might not have been his dream club, but is definitely one of the best. “United might not have been my dream club, but they have always been among the best clubs in the world for me,” Mkhitaryan told Bild.

He also said “Manchester United are a bigger club than Borussia Dortmund. Everyone knows that and we should just accept that. It was a new challenge for me that I could not turn down.”

Mkhitaryan was heavily criticized for his performances in the German Cup final last season. It is understood that he refused to take a penalty in a crucial match for Dortmund. Watzke claims that Dortmund lost to Bayern Munich only because of that incident and still blames Mkhitaryan.

But Mkhitaryan has responded to Watzke’s allegations saying penalties are decided by the coach and not by the player himself. He also added that people should evaluate a player’s value on a seasonal approach and not by a single game.

“If he[Watzke] wants to evaluate me on the basis of one game, this is wrong. He has probably forgotten what I did the whole season before. I would have scored a penalty in Berlin. But there’s a coach and eleven players on the pitch, and we discussed who would take,” Mkhitaryan said.

In addition to that, Mkhitaryan also commented on his Manchester United team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger’s situation at the club.

Mkhitaryan said: “I’m glad he[Bastian] got another chance. He knows exactly what needs to be done on the pitch. I can only report positively about him because he has a great character.”
