Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed his transfer plans for the summer, after losing the clinical Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The brilliant Swedish international left Manchester United after spending a year and half at Old Trafford but not before making his mark in the Premier League. In just 53 appearances for Manchester United, Zlatan Ibrahimovic went on to score 29 goals and produce a further 10 assists winning the Europa League and was one of the main reasons the Old Trafford side did comparatively well last season.
Lukaku and Rashford, Jose Mourinho’s strike team next season??
However, after suffering a horrific meniscus and cruciate ligament injury in April of 2017, the Swede saw his career as a Red Devil come to a screeching halt, with the forward making his first appearance of the 2017/19 season in November of 2017 in a 4-1 win over Newcastle. But thanks to the injury, Ibrahimovic has never been the same, and he was finally released a less than a week ago.
But now with the Swede’s departure, Manchester United only have former Everton star Romelu Lukaku and do not have an obvious replacement for the Belgian international. While they do have the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford, and even Anthony Martial to place as strikers, the Red Devils’ don’t have an out and out striker.
However, despite that Jose Mourinho has revealed that he has no plans to sign a new forward in the summer, and will instead hand over the reigns to Marcus Rashford. During his pre-match press conference, the former Chelsea boss went on to say “We have Lukaku and Marcus Rashford as number nines, and of course Marcus can play right and left, but Marcus is a striker. Alexis can play as a striker, [Anthony] Martial can play as a striker, so without having another Lukaku, we have three more players that can play as a nine.
If we don’t have Lukaku for different reasons, we can change systems and play with two and give more mobility. For example, Marcus and Martial together, Marcus and Alexis together, so we are not going to go for another number nine,” Mourinho added.
