Manchester United are keen on signing Atalanta defender Cristian Romero this summer. They are in search of a new centre-back to partner Harry Maguire and Romero is one of the many players they are keeping their tabs on.
The Red Devils have enjoyed a very fruitful 2020-21 campaign. They will certainly finish second in the Premier League this season, barring some disastrous performances in the last three games. They are also in the finals of the Europa League and face Spanish side Villarreal on 27th May. If they manage win the competition, it will be their first silverware since 2017 and first under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
But their midweek defeat to Leicester City handed the league title to city rivals Manchester City. And if they want to seriously challenge City for next season’s title, they will have to spend big in the upcoming transfer window.
As a result, Solskjaer has already identified areas he wants to improve. After Edinson Cavani decided to extend his contract at the club for a further year, the striker position is not a priority for Solskjaer. The Norwegian wants a centre-back, a defensive midfielder, and a right-winger this summer.
United in need of a new centre-back:
One priority position Solskjaer definitely wants to upgrade is the centre-back. He wants someone who can complement club captain Harry Maguire in the central of defence.
Victor Lindelof has played alongside Maguire for large parts of the season. But the Swedish international does not have the physical presence to partner with Maguire in the long term. Eric Bailly did sign a new contract a few weeks ago. But he is injury prone because of which he has only started eight league games this season.
United have conceded 38 league goals this season in the league. That is the same number as eighth-placed Arsenal and just three more than eleventh-placed Aston Villa. No wonder, Solskjaer is keen to sign a new centre-back this summer.
They have been linked with a host of players including Raphael Varane, Jules Kounde, Pau Torres, Sven Botman, and now Cristian Romero.
United interested in Romero:
Atalanta’s Christian Romero has caught the eye of the Red Devils after an impressive campaign with the Italian side. The 23-year-old defender is currently on loan at Atalanta from Juventus till the end of the season.
Romero has been a key player for Gasperini’s side this season, as they sit second in Serie A. He has played 27 league games, also scoring two and assisting two goals this campaign. This has seen him get a solid WhoScored rating of 7.17. He also started three Champions League games.
According to Sky Sports, Atalanta have an obligation to buy the Argentina international for £21.5 million from the Old Lady this summer. And Atalanta wants to make a profit by selling the centre-back for around £34 million.
That fee is pretty cheap compared to United’s other centre-back targets. Varane will likely cost around £70 million, the same fee Sevilla will ask for Kounde and Torres will likely cost £50 million. Romero is a cheap and solid option for United and at 23, his best years are ahead of him.
