Manchester United news: Manager Erik ten Hag has refused to confirm whether Cristiano Ronaldo will start for the Red Devils in the Europa League group stage match against FC Sheriff.
Manchester United head into the game on the back of their defeat to Real Sociedad in their Europa League 22/23 opener. The Red Devils hosted Sociedad at Old Trafford in their first game in Europe this season.
Man Utd, though, did not earn any points from the match against Sociedad as the Spanish side inflicted a 1-0 defeat on the hosts. They scored the goal through a controversial penalty.
Sheriff, meanwhile, defeated Omonia F.C 3-0 in their first game and sit top of the Group E table with three points. They will be hoping to cause an upset and solidify their position as group leaders.
Manchester United News: Ten Hag on Whether Ronaldo Will Start vs Sheriff
Speaking ahead of the match, Ten Hag was asked if Ronaldo will start against FC Sheriff. Ten Hag refused to confirm whether the Portuguese will start, stating: “I’m sorry but the Moldovan fans will have to wait until tomorrow [to find out].”
Ronaldo had made it to Man Utd starting XI in their match against Sociedad. The 37-year-old featured right from the start until the very end as Man Utd ended the game empty-handed.
Ronaldo has not had a great start to the season. The Portuguese superstar has featured in all six of Man Utd’s Premier League matches so far this season. But he has only made one start, with the rest being appearances off the bench.
Ten Hag dropped Ronaldo to the bench in Man Utd’s first game of the season, against Brighton. Ronaldo came on in the second half as Man Utd lost the game 2-1.
Ronaldo returned to the starting XI in Man Utd’s 4-0 defeat to Brentford. Man Utd have since played four games in Premier League, and Ronaldo was a substitute in all those. He came off the bench in the second half of all those games as Man Utd collected 12 points.
Ronaldo, who scored 24 goals for Man Utd last season, is also yet to score for the Red Devils this season. He has drawn blank in all seven games he has played for the Old Trafford outfit in the 22/23 season.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, was heavily linked with an exit from Man Utd in the summer transfer window. But the Portuguese ended up staying put, with interest in him few and far between.
Ronaldo will be hoping to turn the tide and again become a regular starter at Man Utd.
