Manchester United News: Manchester United are very close to appointing Erik Ten Hag as their next manager. Ralf Rangnick looks poised to leave his role as the interim manager and will join the consultant role.

A report from The Mirror comes as no surprise, considering the fact that the Ajax manager was the leading candidate for the post.

But it was not the same, from the start. Current PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino was the frontrunner for the position. His ability to communicate with his players, as well as improving young players was considered an exceptional talent.

His Premier League experience had made him ideal for the role. But it wasn’t enough to impress the United board.

The club went for Erik Ten Hag due to the trophy factor. Mauricio Pochettino didn’t win any trophy with Tottenham.

His life in Paris also seems difficult after the recent Champions League exit. Just the Ligue one trophy is the one they are challenging for.

Whereas, Erik Ten Hag has won two Eredivisie trophies with Ajax. He has been able to lift his team to the Champions League.

Their best run was in the 2018/19 campaign. They reached the Champions League semi-final for the first time in their club history.

He also won two domestic titles with Ajax. He has also been able to rebuild the squad year after year. His playing style is too deemed as a tactical one.

What does Erik Ten Hag want from Manchester United?

Erik Ten Hag just wanted a few assurances from the club. He wanted more control over the club recruitment.

Manchester United has made numerous flop signings over the years. The Dutch manager doesn’t want to repeat the same mistakes at Old Trafford.

This includes his say in the club’s transfer strategies and planning about selling players in the transfer market. The board has agreed to his demands and will give him control over the signings.

But a lone issue standing in front of Ten Hag is the Champions League. This season’s progress will define how the upcoming season unfolds.

As things stand, the club looks increasingly likely to play in the Europa League this season. The club’s financial books will be hit hard and losses worth millions could occur.

There are chances that many of their transfer targets may option against joining the club due to their inability to compete in the World’s biggest competition. Currently, the club stands in the seventh position on the table.
