Manchester United has joined the race to sign Ivan Toney over the uncertain future of Cristiano Ronaldo.
According to Calciomercato, Brentford is in talks with the 26-year-old to tie him down to a new deal to avoid other English Premier League suitors.
The British striker has attracted the interest of major clubs for his consistent performance in the Premier League.
As the uncertainty over CR7’s future looms, United officials have identified the Brentford striker as a possible option in the January window.
Ivan Toney has already netted 6 goals in 9 games for his club so far this season. He also ended up being the top scorer by registering 14 goals under his name.
During Bretford’s time at Championship, Toney scored a staggering record of 31 goals, which helped his club to promotion to the English Premier League.
The 26-year-old’s contract will expire in 2025, and the club is simultaneously offering a new £100-a-week wage to extend his stay at the club. His marvellous form helped him to earn an England call-up for the Nations League fixtures against Italy and Germany last month.
But Manchester United is not alone in the race to get Toney’s signature, the clubs like Newcastle United, West Ham United, and Leeds United are enquiring about the availability of the striker.
Toney apologised in January after the striker’s saying “fuck Brentford” was published online while he was on his holiday in Dubai. In his apology, he said: “I also want to apologise to all Brentford fans. I respect the way you all support the team and I have to say how much I love playing for the club and for you.”
Despite all these, he is still the main man under Thomas Frank’s Brentford side. After Eriksen’s arrival in January on a free transfer, Toney became more prolific in front of goals.
Ten Hag will eager to bring the English striker to link him with his former teammate to replace out-of-favour Ronaldo.
While talking to The Sun, Troy Deeny, spoke about his friend: “If he were doing what he is doing now in a more glamorous club, we would become almost melodramatic about him. If he gets the year he probably gets, Chelsea will keep an eye on him, even if it would be perfect for United.”
Ronaldo is now in the final year of his Manchester contract. Even though the club has an option of extending the contract for one more year. Only time can whether he will stay or not.
