Manchester United have been trying to negotiate a renewal with this star but multiple efforts have failed to reach his expectation according to the player’s agent.
Manchester United are set for a major overhaul after the sacking of Jose Mourinho. The club, apparently, will be appointing a Director of Football to oversee the changes. The changes include a new manager and also renewing contracts of key players. Anthony Martial’s agent, who is one such player in question, has spoken about the contractual situation.
‘Far from an agreement’
Manchester United and Anthony Martial are far from reaching an agreement according to Philippe Lamboley. “I am very pessimistic about a positive outcome of the discussions,” Lamboley told RMC Sport. “They’ve already made several offers that do not meet our expectations. We are far from an agreement for the time being.”
The Red Devils are understood to have triggered an option to keep him at the club for another year. But the statements from the agent will be music to the ears for Chelsea and Arsenal. The Premier Leagues sides have been keenly monitoring the forward’s situation at Old Trafford. Other top European clubs like Juventus, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan are also keeping tabs.
Mourinho’s update on the situation
Jose Mourinho has spoken about Martial’s contract situation a few before his sacking. “I don’t belong to the discussions of contracts,” Mourinho said. “To be honest, I don’t even know their contracts in the sense of numbers and I’m really happy with that, not participating in these kinds of discussions.”
“Obviously, I hope they will agree. Obviously, I hope. When you reach a level, or when you are almost reaching that level, is when you become a top player. One thing is a top talent, another is a top player. He is now much closer to being a top player. Obviously, I would like him to stay. I know the club wants him very much to stay. Hopefully, he is going to stay.”
Author’s take
Despite Jose Mourinho’s positive comments, he might have been one of the reasons why Martial hasn’t renewed yet. Now, that the Portuguese has been shown the door, things might change in a positive sense. Martial is immensely impressive at Manchester but only in bits. One thing no one can deny is his talent and how good a player he might turn out to be if he gets his act together.
In a pragmatic United side, the man is putting up nearly three dribbles a game which is mindblowing. The Frenchman can also thrive as a strike considering his goalscoring prowess. So, Manchester United should do anything and everything to keep the 23-year-old. Time for the Red Devils to flex their financial muscle, once again.
