Manchester United are said to be keen on bringing Ousmane Dembele to Old Trafford in the January transfer window. Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed, that the Red Devils will try to sign him at the start of 2021.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, United want to sign him on loan and not permanently. Even this summer they tried to sign him but failed to agree on a deal with Barca. Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side was desperate to sign Jadon Sancho but failed to sign him as well.
Only after failing to sign Sancho, they turned their attention to Dembele. They look set to reignite their interest in him January transfer window. However, it is unclear how much money or what kind of offer the Red Devils will offer.
Even Daniel James has been linked with an exit from the club. The Welshman is behind Mason Greenwood in the starting line up. With James leaving Old Trafford, they will still need a new winger to add more competition and cover at the club.
Can it happen in the January transfer window?
Currently, the Catalans are without Ansu Fati. The youngster made a fantastic start to the season under Ronald Koeman. However, he suffered a long term injury which has ruled him out for four months. While Dembele never had a better start to a season at Camp Nou.
Dembele has often being injured during his time at Barca. He has struggled with fitness and there have been times when he has been linked with an exit from the club. However this season, he has stayed fit and made nine appearances for the club in all competitions.
Koeman needs him at the club with Fati injured. Thus it is unlikely that they will allow to leave him in the January transfer window. Though they could allow him to leave only if Red Devils offer big money to sign.
But Fabrizio Romano has said that they only want him in on loan. They don’t want to sign him permanently. Juventus are also said to be interested in him and they are keeping tabs on him. Dembele’s contract expires in 2022.
Alternatives to Dembele for Manchester United
Given the situation, it looks unlikely that the Red Devils will not be able to bring Dembele to Old Trafford. They will have to look for alternatives. One such player they could sign can be Fedrico Bernadeschi of Juventus. It is possible that Bianconeri might be willing to trade him in January.
Under Andrea Pirlo, he is not a guaranteed starter and he behind in the pecking order. At the age of 26, he will need more playing time. He has experience of playing Champions League football as well. Also, he will not immediately threaten Mason Greenwood’s development.
Taking into account all these things, Juve might want to get some money from him. Thus United should try to sign him on loan in January. Another aspect to look at the current situation can be poor management at Manchester United.
It has been very well highlighted how poorly they negotiated Jadon Sancho’s transfer. More than anything else they need backroom changes and they need people who know how to run a football club. If they had a football director, perhaps this situation might not have arisen in the first place.
