In 2018, West Brom stunned Manchester United by beating them 0-1 at Old Trafford. The result meant that Manchester City won the Premier League that season. Since then both teams have taken a path of recovery. However, this season things haven’t gone as per plan for the Red Devils. They are yet to win a home game in the Premier League. Solskjaer’s side has lost three at home and drawn one.
While West Brom has been problematic to teams like Chelsea and Tottenham this season. They will look to continue that against Manchester United. If the Throstles win this one it will be for the first time they will win consecutive games against United since 1980. They will be encouraged by the fact that the Red Devils have conceded more home goals (10) than any other team. While United have also failed to score in the last three of their four league games against West Brom.
Manchester United’s leaky defence will be a problem for them. They have only kept one clean sheet in a 0-0 draw against Chelsea. While all other teams have managed to score to them. In attack, they are heavily reliant on Burno Fernandes. The former Sporting midfielder has been single handily pulling the strings. The likes of Rashford, Martial, and Greenwood have been inconsistent.
While West Brom under Slaven Bilic at times has shown some promising signs. Their attackers will look to get in behind Harry Maguire and co. Manchester United will take the game to them and West Brom will defend in blocks. Bilic has usually used a back three and Martial could struggle against three centre-backs. He will try to drag one of the defenders creates space for Rashford with help of Burno Fernandes. Thus Throstles will try to limit Fernandes’ influence.
Team News and Injury update
The Red Devils are worried about the fitness of the first-choice centre backs Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. The latter has bruised foot and Lindelof has a back problem. The Swede was also substituted against Everton.
Solksjear will also be hopeful of Rashford and Greenwood have the match fitness for the game. While Alex Telles could be in contention after testing negative for COVID-19. Eric Baily, Luke Shaw and Phil Jones are all ruled out for the game.
Slaven Bilic will be sweating upon the fitness of three key players. Branislav Ivanovic and Matheus Pereira were not available for the Tottenham game, as they were in self-isolation. Those two can only participate if they test negative and train with the first team.
Callum Robinson was sent back home after contracting the virus during the international break. Robson-Kanu also lacks match fitness and Field has been ruled out till December due to a knee injury.
Ones to Watch
The Red Devils faithful will be hopeful that Burno Fernandes can again waive his magic as he did against Everton. It should a game where Cavani can score goals and build his confidence as well. Van De Beek can also make a mark given the current mini injury crises at the club. Juan Mata could be crucial to open up a stubborn West Brom defense. Telles was very effective against PSG, before contacting COVID-19. Thus, Van de Beek, Telles, and Mata are the players to watch out for.
If Callum Robinson is able to make it to the team then he will the key player for the Baggies. Chelsea legend Branislav Ivanovic’s experience might come in handy in such hard games. Another player with a Chelsea connection can be the player to watch out for. Conor Gallagher on loan at West Brom and the midfielder has been impressive. He is the player to watch out for.
Man United vs West Brom: Head to Head stats
If we go by recent games, West Brom should be the favorite, however, things don’t work like that in football. The Baggies last won the game at Old Trafford but they got relegated as well. That Manchester United team will try to challenge City for the title, this one is trying to finish in the top four. Thus times have changed and so have the managers.
