The 19 year old produced another stellar performance to help his side beat Ajax.
Lionel Messi wasn’t the only one who dominated the football headlines today. Ajax captain Matthijs De Ligt and his side also dominated the headlines. The Dutch side defeated Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus in Turin to qualify for the semi finals of the Champions League for the first time since 1997. De Ligt gave yet another remarkable performance and scored the winning goal that dented Juventus’s hope of winning the Champions League. The 19 year old’s performance once again reminded why big European clubs are after his signature. After the game De Ligt dropped a hint on which club will he join in summer.
Matthijs de Ligt produced a stellar display as he captained Ajax into the Champions League semi-finals at Juventus ’ expense on Tuesday evening. The 19-year-old Dutch international was outstanding in defence and powered home the winner as the Amsterdammers beat the Italian side 2-1 in Turin, to secure a 3-2 aggregate victory. That ensured that Ajax are the first team in Champions League history to make the semi-finals after surviving three qualifying rounds, and will now meet Manchester City or Tottenham in the last four. But the reality is that this summer the Dutch side will be broken up, as Europe’s more wealthy elite cherrypick their most talented stars. Barcelona have already done that, closing a £75million deal to take Frankie de Jong, the midfield conductor, to Camp Nou next season.
And the next man to go is expected to be De Ligt, widely rated as the finest defender of his age in world football, and who every major European side admire. Manchester United , Ajax, Arsenal , Barcelona, Real Madrid , Juventus and many more have sent scouts to watch him over the last 18 months. Mino Raiola’s latest diamond, it is Juve and Barcelona who have been leading the fight; recent suggestions in Spain are that Barca are ready to cash in on World Cup winner Samuel Umtiti to land him.As De Ligt made his way through the mixed zone in Turin, fresh from celebrating in the Ajax dressing room with his teammates, he was captured on camera and asked about his future by El Chiringuito. De Ligt smiles as Barcelona are mentioned. Namely, whether it was possible to say no to Barcelona.
“I don’t know” came De Ligt’s response, along with a smile and a wink.Asked when he would announce his transfer to Barcelona, De Ligt was remaining coy, replying: “Announce? There is nothing to announce.” Ajax coach Erik ten Hag has already confirmed there is “zero chance” of De Ligt remaining in the Eredivisie next season.
It’s understood that a move with pal De Jong to Catalunya is De Ligt’s No.1 choice this summer. Barcelona know how talented these players are and will be delighted to see both of them playing alongside Messi next season.
