Guardiola was seen throwing his coat away after the VAR disallowed Sterling’s winning goal.
Seven goals and two game changing decisions were enough to keep everyone at their toes at the Etihad. The match will surely go down as one of the greatest European encounter in recent times. The game had a little bit of everything but, following a flurry of early goals, plenty of tense moments and a bit of late VAR drama, Spurs sealed their place in the Champions League semi-finals.
After topping Manchester City 1-0 at home in the opening leg, Spurs edged the Premier League champions on away goals after a drama-filled match. After the game, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettinho reveals what Pep Guardiola said to him after the VAR call.
When the ball rustled into the net to make the score 5-4 on aggregate to Manchester City, Mauricio Pochettino’s emotion boiled over. His jacket was thrown to the floor and he slumped back into his chair in the dugout. When Sergio Aguero was adjudged to have been offside in the build up to Raheem Sterling’s strike, Pep Guardiola mirrored his opponent by thrusting his coat from his shoulders.
The Man City boss managed to regain his composure enough to be cordial with Pochettino, who admitted he hadn’t noticed the reaction of his counterpart. Pohettino said: “Yes? I didn’t see. He was watching me. No, he only congratulated me and shook hands and said see you Saturday again. He was very good and his coaching staff very respectful.”
The Spurs boss expanded more on the moments he thought his Champions League dreams were over. He said: “It was a moment where I threw my jacket, threw my jumper and I went to sit next to Jesus and Miguel and Toni. It was a few seconds like this (hands on heads). It was so fast. There were a lot of bad feelings and bad ideas. I didn’t want to watch because in that moment I take off my jacket and jumper and throw to bench and go to my seat and think very bad things. But in that moment I hear Jesus’ voice say ‘oh maybe it is offside’ – VAR checking and in that moment I was alive again. I understand the situation on the bench of City; from top of the world down, disappointed, that is unbelievable, the emotion we lived last night was amazing. A very good end for us but I feel sorry when that situation happen because you can be on the other side and it is difficult when that situation happens. Last night it was for us, all you can do is enjoy, celebrate, be respectful of the opponent. ”
Few matches come with as much emotion as this match. The emotions of both the team’s manager were enough to tell how big this match was for them. It was very professional behavior from Guardiola after knowing the VAR call.
