The Italian was furious after his side lose 2-0 at Emirates meaning that the Blues are just 3 points better off than the Gunners as well as Manchester United
The race for top 4 is on. The title race may be decided but it’s the race to top 4 which seems to have new twists and turns every week. Manchester United’s resurgence certainly earned their name in the top 4 conversation. Arsenal’s impressive victory against Chelsea yesterday has given new spirit to Unai Emery and Arsenal faithful. It has led to Chelsea in a stuttering form. After the game against Arsenal, Maurizio Sarri was furious at his players.
Maurizio Sarri launched a stinging attack on his Chelsea players’ mentality after a meek defeat to Arsenal, accusing them of being “extremely difficult to motivate” and lacking “ferocity” in their game. For the first time since taking over at Stamford Bridge six months ago, Sarri felt compelled to revert to his native Italian and lean on an interpreter to express his exasperation at a defeat which means Chelsea’s lead over Arsenal and Manchester United has been cut to only three points.

Sarri said, “I have to say that I’m extremely angry, very angry indeed. This defeat was due to our mentality more than anything else, our mental approach. We played against a team which, mentally, was far more determined than we were. And this is something I can’t accept. We had a similar issue in the league game at Tottenham. We spoke a great deal about that loss and our approach at the time and I thought we’d overcome this issue.” Sarri continued his vitriol and said players lack motivation and determination.
Sarri said, “But it appears we still seem to lack sufficient motivation, being mentally solid and determination. So I’m not happy, I’m really not happy. But the fact of the matter is it appears this group of players are extremely difficult to motivate. When you see this kind of game, when one team is quite obviously more determined than the other, you can’t really talk about tactics.”
Sarri’s anger is understandable. Chelsea had a golden opportunity to cement their place in top 4. However, it’s the manner of defeat that made Sarri furious. It’s tough to see how Chelsea will come up from this. Sarri may have got Higuain but it remains to be seen how he keeps his players motivated.
