With their second signing of the winter window Barcelona brought in Yerry Mina and the Colombian was full of praise for his new teammates.
The young Colombian had been linked with a move to Barcelona as the Catalans look for a replacement for aging star Javier Mascherano. However, while a deal had been set-up for after the World Cup, the Catalan giants were very keen to complete an early move for the Palmeiras star and thus pushed for a deal in the January window. The 22-year-old had nothing but praises for his new team-mates even calling Lionel Messi the best in the world.
During his unveiling, the 23-year-old went on to say how happy he was to join an incredible club and with reports that Machester City, Real Madrid, and even Leicester City were interested in the Colombian, Barcelona had to move fast. However, the Catlan giants did have the first choice over the 23-year-old, despite Mina’s agent insisting that the option is not air-tight and that even includes the potential fee.
In an interview, Yerry Mina went on to say, “For me, he [Messi] is the best in the world. The first impression I got of him was one of humility. I got goosebumps when Messi approached me with Suarez in the dressing room.
The Colombian international will undoubtedly strengthen Barcelona’s defensive side, especially with Javier Mascherano expected to leave the club. The 33-year-old Argentine has started only six games this season and already announced his intention to leave the club a few months ago. However, now with Yerry Mina in their squad, there is a good chance that Barcelona will let Mascherano leave.
Mina further added when asked about why he walked barefoot on the field, “There is a saying in my country that says, ‘Touch the land you want to conquer with the sole of your feet. And here I want to make history with everyone. I always do it and I hope to succeed. I have come to work. To contribute to the team and learn from my team-mates. This is a great club and since arriving you can feel the atmosphere here.
👍 Yerry Mina

“It made my hairs stand on end. I’ve always been a Barcelona fan. I have an immense joy to be in Barcelona, thanks to Colombia for all the support. I will be calm and I’ll try to control the adrenaline and I’ll adapt to the group with my dancing. I’ve always followed great full-backs and great central defenders, like those here, such as [Gerard] Pique, [Javier] Mascherano, [Samuel] Umtiti and [Thomas] Vermaelen.”
In a world where players are worth 100 million plus, for a center-back of such potential Yerry Mina’s transfer fee is mere peanuts. However, while the 23-year-old has proved himself at Past, Santa Fe, and Palmeiras and even for Colombia in the senior squad; it will certainly be interesting to see how well he does at Barcelona.
