Messi equals Xavi's record to become the player with most wins for club

FC Bacelona cruised past Lyon in the 2nd Leg of the Round of 16 as Lionel Messi registered yet another record.

FC Barcelona in the quest for winning a treble this season, registered a thumping 5-1 win over Olympique Lyon in the 2nd Leg of the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League to book them a spot in the Quarter Finals. They were driven by an incredible Lionel Messi who scored 2 goals and also came up with 2 assists. Ousmane Dembele, Phillipe Coutinho and Gerard Pique were also among the scorers in the 5-1 drubbing.

Barcelona Manager Ernesto Valverde was very happy with his team’s performance and spoke after the match.

“We are all very focused for this competition and Leo too, he has had an incredible match. It was extraordinary, we dominated the game, we had chances, we scored two goals and we were able to get one more.

“It was a Champions League match and in this type of game, it is normal that we have moments of tension and pressure because they tend to be very fair results. In the Champions League, you cannot relax because 2-0 was not a definitive result.”

As a result of this Barcelona win Lionel Messi registered a historical record. He equalled Xavi Hernández’s record and became the player to have the joint most wins for the club (476). Xavi achieved this feat in 767 appearances while Messi took only 673 matches to achieve this record.

The Champions League Quarter Final Draw will be held on Friday. It will be interesting to see whom the Blaugrana side face. They will be looking to change their Quarter Final fate this time around, as they were knocked out of the Quarter Finals in the last 3 seasons. The Lionel Messi side’s next assignment is against Real Betis away from home in La Liga in Sunday night.
