Lionel Messi names his favourites to win the Champions League

Lionel Messi thinks that Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are in prime position to lift the “big years” come the end of season

The five-time Ballon d’Or has backed Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain to win their first Champions League trophy. Both the clubs are having stellar domestic campaigns and are sitting comfortably at the top of their respective league table. Barcelona hasn’t been too shabby themselves either. They are the only unbeaten team in Europe’s top five leagues and are in the final of the Copa Del Rey. They are well on their way to secure an unprecedented third treble.

Talking to The Mirror, Messi said that Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also strong contenders along with the aforementioned duo.

“Manchester City are one of the strongest teams around as well as Paris Saint-Germain. I also do not exclude Real Madrid in terms of quality and experience, even though they have not yet achieved the expected results. Then there’s Bayern Munich, another great team who will play until the end. Today, however, the best are city and PSG.”

Manchester City has been steamrolling every club in the Premier League thanks to Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard has transformed the ‘noisy neighbours’ from an underperforming team to an irresistible force. Paris Saint-Germain, on the other hand, made a huge statement by signing Neymar from Barcelona and breaking the transfer record in the process. They have consequently assembled the most fearsome front trio in world football comprising of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani.

Lionel Messi is downplaying Barcelona’s chances of winning the Champions League. The “big ears” has been coming to Spain since the last four years and the Catalans will want to continue the trend. PSG and Manchester City are strong contenders in the Champions League but there’s still a long way to go before the final.
