Mourinho takes a dig at Bayern Munich

Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho made some snide remarks about the Bundesliga giants. He questioned Bayern’s transfer’s policy of going after rival players. From a neutral perspective, there is indeed truth in Mou’s comments.

Bayern’s transfer history:

If we go by the recent history of Bayern’s transfers, there is a consistent pattern. As recent as this past January transfer window, they signed Niklas Sule and Sebastian Rudy from Hoffenheim. Now, Sule has a great potential, also expected to make it to the national team soon. Apart from these signings recently, Bayern has acquired one of their best players from Borussia Dortmund. Be it Lewandowski, Gotze(who was sold back) or Hummels, Bayern has always signed the star Dortmund players. It is only because of his injury record that Marco Reus wasn’t approached. In that respect, Bayern does have a policy of weakening the rival clubs by buying their best players. Fortunately for teams like BVB, they have managed to cope well with it.

United’s rival transfers in the Fergie era:

During the times of Sir Alex Ferguson, it was considerably much easier to do business with rival clubs. Ferguson himself signed many rival players, the most iconic ones being Robin Van Persie, Sheringham, and Michael Carrick. As Mourinho mentioned, things like these were possible in the BPL a few years back. Now, he believes the competitiveness of the league has made clubs hesitant to deal with rival clubs over transfers. The best players of these clubs go to other leagues altogether, barring rare exceptions(City-Arsenal, Torres-Chelsea).

Mourinho’s comments:

“Do you think I can go to Tottenham and bring two Tottenham players to kill Tottenham? I cannot. I cannot go to Arsenal and bring the two best Arsenal players. I cannot go to Chelsea and bring two of the players that I love very very much. That time is over. ” It is understandable, the logic behind Mourinho’s comments. The season’s top 4 race is reason enough to comprehend why the top clubs won’t be willing to make any transfers amongst them anymore. Mourinho believes the intense competition has forced clubs to instill in their players a winning mentality. When asked about such players in United, he remarked, “The ones with a history of success where that belongs to their natural habitat, Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, who else? Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but not in our club, Antonio Valencia and not much.”

Sitting 17 points off the table toppers, the Premier League trophy doesn’t seem possible for the Red Devils anymore. Though, they are still competing for three other trophies.
