As the argument continues in opting between Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Kartik for the World Cup, chairman of selectors MSK Prasad gives a major hint
The All India Senior Selection Committee of the BCCI recently announced the Indian squads for the T20I and ODI series against Australia. As the tour commences on Sunday, 24th of February, with the first T20I in Visakhapatnam. The selectors however have dropped in some shocking news as they excluded the Tamil Nadu cricketer Dinesh Karthik.
Karthik’s performances in the recent ODIs in Australia and New Zealand have been pretty decent. However, selectors opted for young Rishabh Pant over Karthik for the upcoming series against the Kangaroos and Chairman of selectors MSK Prasad justified the decision made in an interview with India Today.
“It’s definitely a healthy debate that’s going on. We know Dinesh Karthik has been doing really well in the finisher’s role. At the same time, Rishabh Pant’s escalation has been very fast. He is showing a lot of maturity. Both of them are equally good but what is good for the team is going to help us take a call at the appropriate time,” Prasad mentioned.
Not only MSK, but former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar also opined his views on Karthik’s ODI career. “His fans will feel sorry because with the opportunity he has got, he has done as well as he could. But I feel with this selection or non-selection of Karthik, India have told everyone that we look at Karthik as a T20 batsman, and his 50-over future is over as far as we are concerned,” Manjrekar mentioned.
While Pant is some fresh blood in the team and has been proving his abilities in every possible occasion, Dinesh Karthik is a mind full of experiences. Hence, it does create a dilemma as to whom to select out of the two. While MS Dhoni remains the first choice keeper for the World Cup, it is yet to be confirmed who will grab the ticket for England between the above mentioned two.
