NBA News: Although Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers did not win the NBA’s Most Valuable Player title this season, he is now an MVP: Most Valuable Philadelphian. Read the article for this NBA News.
The Philadelphia City Council passed a resolution honoring Embiid for his achievements this season on Thursday.
According to Anna Orso of the Philadelphia Inquirer, part of the resolution is as follows:
Whereas, Joel Embiid has been a loyal member of the Philadelphia 76ers for years, has received various awards, and has led the club to victory in countless games and tough struggles. Whereas Joel Embiid is deserving of the MVP award, today, therefore, be it.

NBA News: Most Valuable Philadelphian isn’t the most hotly contested category
Although you can appreciate the municipal council’s motivation here. Since they were simply searching for a way to honor Embiid, this is a bit cheesy. Many Philadelphians are humiliated by the situation, as seen by their reactions on social media.
There’s no news on whether Embiid will accept his MVP trophy anytime soon. In terms of the prize itself, Embiid came in second to Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic.
Embiid stated, “I’m not mad.” “I’ve put myself in that situation for the past two years. It never happened. It’s almost as if it’s whatever at this point. Whatever occurs, occurs. Last year, I ran a campaign for it, this year, I answered questions when they were posed to me, and next year, a few years before I retire, it’s almost as if I don’t know what else I can do to win it.”
Despite this, Embiid was snubbed (again), and the Sixers’ season eventually followed in the footsteps of their big man’s MVP campaign. Everyone was disappointed. Nobody was happy when they got home.
As a result, the Philadelphia City Council resolved to take action. They named Joel Embiid the one real MVP on Thursday morning after hours of deliberation… That is, the Most Valuable Philadelphian.
If that isn’t the most depressing consolation prize you’ve ever seen, we’re not sure what is. That’s like being dumped and having your mother tell you that you’re wonderful and handsome and that you’ll meet someone new. She’s probably right (at least in terms of meeting new people), but it just makes matters worse.
