A former vice president of the National Basketball Players Association was detained on Wednesday. Adding to a criminal case in which 18 former NBA players were accused of cheating the league’s health and welfare benefit plan. And unlawfully pocketing millions of dollars.

The amended indictment adds Keyon Dooling to the case. This was initially filed in October. It revealed that a number of former NBA players had collectively received $2.5 million from the benefits scheme.

Dooling was one of three people added to the indictment on Wednesday. He was a union officer for eight years and finally became the organization’s first vice president.

Dooling is currently an assistant coach with the Utah Jazz. He played in the NBA for portions of 13 seasons with seven different clubs.

The Jazz stated in a statement that Dooling informed them of the charge on Wednesday morning.

He’s been placed on paid administrative leave, according to the Jazz. “We shall refrain from additional comment due to the pending legal proceedings”. Dooling was apprehended in Utah on Wednesday, according to authorities.

A doctor and a dentist were also included in the indictment as medical practitioners. They aided the plot, according to investigators. Dooling “allegedly engaged in the plan and solicited additional co-conspirators to join the scam,” according to authorities.

All were charged with health care fraud and wire fraud for a scheme that allegedly lasted from at least 2017 to 2020, according to officials. A prosecutor stated in October that each defendant submitted fraudulent statements ranging from $65,000 to $420,000.
