The new Barcelona striker also failed in attempting skills before the camera
Barcelona completed the controversial signing of Martin Brathwaite from Leganes yesterday. The club exploited a La Liga rule that allowed them to make a stop-gap signing in the former Middlesbrough striker. Barca failed to make any transfer in the January window following the long-term injury to Ousmane Dembele,
Brathwaite started his professional career with Esbjerg, before making his debut for Denmark. He then moved to France to join Toulouse for €2m. The Guyanese forward has seven goals in his 37 caps for his country. Prior to his controversial move to Barcelona this month, the 28-year-old had become a first-team regular Leganes. Leganes is the team fighting relegation in this edition. The striker also enjoyed a spell in the north-east of England in Middlesbrough in 2017.
The Catalunya outfit agreed on the deal, conducted the medical and unveiled the player all within 24 hours. These actions indicate the club’s urgency after Ousmane Dembele’s injury ruling him out for the remainder of the season. Martin has scored six of bottom-club Leganes’ 18 league goals this season helping the team with goals. The Daily Mail reports Leganes’ general manager Martin Ortega has criticized Barca and the division’s governing body over their handling of the transfer.
Is Brathwaite unwelcome at Camp Nou?

Martin Braithwaite sealed a dream move from Leganes to Barcelona this week. But the former Middlesbrough forward was not given a hero’s welcome at the Nou Camp. Barca fans usually fill the stands of their historic stadium to celebrate the arrival of a marquee signing. However, this time only photographers, club officials, and Braithwaite’s family members were present. He performed kick-ups on the hallowed turf in front of the empty seats, but did not do well and got trolled in social media.
Brathwaite flicked the ball off his head to the ground and began to dribble with it. He also tried attempting a ‘rainbow flick’ but completely messed up during the execution. It is indeed not the best of starts to Braithwaite’s Barcelona career. His press conference did not go with the plan either. Most of the Spanish press seemed disinterested in asking him questions. Instead, questions were barged at the club president, Josep Bartomeu. Bartomeu fielded eight questions in the conference as Braithwaite answered only two.
