Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar has made a shocking claim that his side needs to sign Messi in order to win the Champions League this season after a frustrating 3-1 loss to Real Madrid.
Real Madrid overcame an early deficit and then scored two goals in a 3-1 victory over Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 ties, a win which keeps Zinedine Zidane’s men on track for their third consecutive Champions League title.
Zidane had looked full on confidence in pre-game interviews, arguing that even though Madrid had a disastrous run in La Liga and the Copa del Rey this campaign, they would return to their best in European Championships.
For most of the game, Real Madrid was outplayed, under siege from a Ligue 1 side who in the second half failed to convert numerous opportunities to re-establish the lead they had taken in the 33rd minute of the game with a beautiful strike from Adrien Rabiot.
But as Paris Saint-Germain failed to convert chances, Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid came from behind to stun Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 in the first leg of their blockbuster Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday.
Ronaldo scored his 100th Champions League goal for defending champions Real Madrid from the penalty spot late in the first half to cancel Adrien Rabiot’s strike for the Ligue 1 giants. The Portuguese star then netted the ball from a close range with seven minutes left before Marcelo completed the job by scoring the third goal of the game.
Neymar, who joined the French Giants last summer for a world record €222 million claimed that Paris Saint-Germain’s board has not provided him with enough support to win the Champions League this season, suggesting that they need to sign former teammate and Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi.
Speaking after that match, Neymar said: “After a performance like this, it’s clear that we don’t have what it takes to win this competition yet. In Barcelona, I won the Champions League with Messi. Do they expect me to do this by myself? Maybe if we add Messi here, we can win the Champions League in the future.”
Neymar, who joined Paris Saint-Germain this season, was fortunate that he wasn’t sent off when he dived for the second time despite being fouled by anyone. The Brazilian was even criticized for appearing to be unwilling to pass to his teammates, a claim which Neymar denied. Neymar added: “My right foot passed to my left and my left foot passed to my right. What more can I do?”
Neymar and co. will be looking forward to keeping their hopes of winning Champions League alive when they host Real Madrid on March 6 at Parc des Princes Stadium.
I do agree with what Neymar had to say. Messi is surely someone who can incredibly boost Paris Saint-Germain’s chances of winning the Champions League.
