If the Chargers Don’t Make the Playoffs in 2022, ESPN Says Brandon Staley ‘May’ Be In Trouble

If the Los Angeles Chargers don’t earn a postseason berth, head coach Brandon Staley might face consequences from the NFL.

If the Los Angeles Chargers ‘ postseason streak reaches four years, as ESPN’s Dan Graziano predicted on Wednesday, Staley “may be on the hot seat.”

As of now, Los Angeles is one game behind the Bengals for the AFC’s last wild card slot and second in the AFC West with a 5-5 record.

When the season began, this was not the forecast for the team but as the season progressed this became a problem.

General manager Tom Telesco of the Chargers made the most of rookie contract player Justin Herbert, who will only count for $7.2 million against the salary limit in 2022, in order to make significant defensive improvements.

He also brought in J.C. Jackson, Austin Johnson, and Sebastian Joseph-Day, and traded for Khalil Mack from the Chicago Bears.

“Dude, it’s the Super Bowl. Indisputable fact,” Derwin James, a top safety, spoke with Tyler Dragon from USA Today about his goals in August. “We need to go further than just making the playoffs and into the Super Bowl. To get there is a need. Our group now has a roster and a team. I believe in us.”

Staley is only in his second season as head coach, but if the Chargers fall short of their goal, he will be under intense scrutiny.

However, injuries have plagued Los Angeles Chargers all season, so the blame cannot be placed on the coaching staff.

Jackson’s patellar tendon ruptured in October. A tendon of Rashawn Slater’s biceps was torn. Mike Williams’ ankle condition became worse after he returned from injured reserve.

In total, Keenan Allen has only been allowed three public outings. To this point, Herbert has played despite a rib injury and has not missed a start.

This is a difficult situation for any coach to be in.

Staley, though, is not immune to criticism, and his late-game choices have occasionally been called into question.

A particularly poor finish in the remaining seven games could be the deciding factor in Staley’s removal, despite the fact that he doesn’t appear to be coaching for his job.
