When Manchester United re-signed Paul Pogba is the world record £100m move, there was a lot riding on him and it looked as if United finally have someone in midfield who’s gonna thrive since the retirement of Paul Scholes. He has caught the world’s imagination since his move to Old Trafford and his every move and pass is under the scanner. 10 games into the season, he has been rather underwhelming for United apart from the Leicester game and has been the target of every critique.
Paul Pogba is a very different from the conventional midfielders, he likes to go forward, he loves to take shots from distance and he’s not afraid of taking on players.
The main problem in the downfall of his performances has been his position. He’s been deployed as a deep lying no. 6 who has the license to get forward at times in a 4-2-3-1 formation. There lies the problem, he’s not suited naturally for such role. He wants to be higher up the pitch. Mourinho has also not settled with his XI yet and Pogba has seen different partners alongside him, currently, by playing Herrera, Mourinho has given Pogba a chance to get forward as Herrera does the dirty work but that is not enough.
If Mourinho really wants to get the best of Paul Pogba then he might have to look at his Juventus days, where in a 4-3-3 formation he was at his best from the left of midfield. He had the license to go forward as Pirlo, Vidal, Marchisio and then Khedira controlled the tempo and did the dirty work.
Also, with French national team, Deschamps has played him in the same sort of role as Mourinho is playing with even more limited liberty to get forward and that is costing his game dearly. France loss in Euros finals was also majorly down to this.
With a player like Pogba in you team you have to play him by his strengths and not let him play by the system, he can’t give his best if he can’t get forward, he’s not meant to do the defensive work.
Also, with such a big move for such a big club even a confident player like him gets the chills and that effects his game and with that if he is not played go his strengths that will eventually deter his game and that’s what has been happening with the big Frenchman.
He in a recent interview during his international duty said that he wants his position changed at United and that he’d like to be in a more attacking role. Coming from the player itself, feels like Mourinho needs some thinking and should look to field him in his best position as a very important period comes for United with some big teams to face one after another and they’d want their record signing to be at his absolute best.
