Pep Guardiola: Manchester City cannot blame the Champion’s League if we fail to win the title

Manchester City Boss Pep Guardiola puts the team on notice when he insisted that his team’s participation in the Champion’s League is not an excuse should they fail to win the Premier League this season.

Their closest competitors for the league race are Chelsea and Liverpool, neither of which are involved in any European competitions this season after missing out on Champions League and Europa League competition.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss galvanized his team has said that the extra games do not make a difference to their title contention.

Guardiola has had a history of guiding his teams through European competitions and through their domestic leagues as well, with success.

“If Chelsea or Liverpool win, it will be because they were better than the others – not just because they were not playing in Europe,” said Guardiola, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

“They are fighting for that. That’s why the qualification just for the top four will be tough.”

City took control of the league early on, winning their first six matches, but have struggled since losing to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in October, winning just three matches since.

They finished second in their Champions League group, behind Barcelona, to qualify for the knockout stages of a competition in which they reached the semi-finals last term.

The Citizens have scored the second-most goals in the Premier League this season, level with Chelsea on 29. Only Liverpool, who have found the net 32 times, have scored more.
