Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed just exactly what the Manchester City star has to do to win the Ballon d’Or.
The Belgian international joined Manchester City in 2015 from Wolfsburg, with a six-year contract and has been in incredible form since then. He has managed to contribute to the club, with 25 goals and 45 assists, which makes him a very valuable asset. This season, however, has seen Kevin De Bruyne hit another impossible to reach level, which has led to comparisons to five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.
And with Manchester City on the road with a chance to complete an unprecedented quadruple, as they go on to face Basel in the Champions League this week, things could get even better. The Belgian international is one of the Premier League’s most creative players, with a few managers including Pep Guardiola calling him the best player in the English league at the moment.
However, it seems that the former Chelsea man has reached another level this season, producing sublime moments of magic consistently. With another hattrick of assists on Saturday against Leicester City, Kevin De Bruyne has taken his tally for the season to 18 assists and 11 goals in just 37 matches for Manchester City.
But despite being widely tipped to win the PFA player of the year, manager Pep Guardiola believes that he can go even further and end Messi and Ronaldo’s era of dominating the Ballon d’Or. “No doubt,” Guardiola stated during his post-match presentation when asked if De Bruyne can break Messi and Ronaldo’s domination.

“But it’s not one game. It’s the whole season, every three days, playing that way. Every three games. He knows – and everyone knows – to be there, you have to win titles, and titles and titles. Especially one. The way he plays, it’s difficult to find one [better] in Europe. You have to be there in the latter stages. Without getting to the latter stages, you will not be nominated.”
However, with the likes of PSG very interested in him, both Pep Guardiola and Manchester City need to hang on to their puppet-master. The Ligue 1 club came very close to signing him back in 2015 when De Bruyne decided to leave Wolfsburg. But, Manchester City intervened and PSG brought in Angel Di Maria instead from Manchester United.
Kevin De Bruyne is not just the most creative player in the Premier League, but also one of the complete midfielders around. He knows when to run, when to pass and exactly where each and every player is positioned on the pitch.
Guardiola rightly called him one of the best in the world, and with the way he’s been playing, Manchester City has a brilliant chance at a quadruple, let alone a Premier League title.
